Hello and welcome to Career Life Planning! I have the honor of being your instructor and look forward to meeting you in the next coming weeks. I am excited to lead you through this journey of identifying what your interests are and what you are good at. Career and life planning is a continuous process that involves reevaluating the world we live in, your personal needs, and what life experiences you have had. My goal is to lead you through this self-exploration and come out feeling more confident and prepared for the life that lies ahead after high school. So, join me as we work to identify what your purpose is and mindfully outline a pathway to reach the future version of the self you strive to be.
Career & Life Planning 110 introduces self-assessment tools to identify college majors and careers by clarifying interests, skills, abilities, values and personality type. Students will examine the decision-making process, self-management, life roles and goal setting. Includes a review of labor market trends, career research, interviewing skills, resume and cover letter writing and job search strategies.
After completing this course, you should be able to:
- Understand the career planning and decision-making process
- Find a career path and/or major consistent with individual skills, values, interests, and personality style
- Recognize the skills needed to succeed in a particular occupational field
- Gain cover letter, resume writing, and interviewing skills
- Have a better understanding of oneself
What to Expect in this Course
During this semester, you will be completing the following activities:
- Student-lead discussion posts.
- Individual homework assignments covering course material, handouts, online research, and assessments.
- In our face-to-face meetings, I will lecture and you will interact through collaborative learning activities.
- Individual and/or group presentations.
This is a 3-unit college level transferable course. To be successful in this class, you should expect to be engaged with the course work for a minimum of 9 hours per week. Attending class in-person and actively participating is an essential part of the learning experience. Since we only meet twice per week, there will be a heavy emphasis on online course work that must be completed.
Types of Assessments
This course will not have the traditional mid-term or final exams. However, your understanding of the course material will be evaluated through student-lead discussion posts, individual homework assignments, handouts, online research, quizzes and career assessments.

We will be using Open Educational Resources (OER) materials for this course! There is no cost to you as a student – all the materials necessary for this course are FREE to you and will be available through Canvas in an online format which you will then be able to download.
Other Relevant Course Information
We will be using Canvas as our online classroom and you will be expected to log into Canvas various times each week in order to keep up with discussion boards and weekly assignments. I will be posting announcements, assignments, and discussion items that you will be expected to participate in, at the beginning of each week (Sunday). Keep in mind that all assignments and discussions must be completed by the posted due dates.
This course is hybrid meaning we will be meeting face-to-face in a classroom and online.

All coursework will be completed online using Canvas. Be sure to complete the Canvas orientation to help you familiarize yourself with this online learning tool (listed below).
