Introduction
My name is Ashlei Wright-Poullard (pronounced Ash-lay). I work as a Disability Support Advisor at WVOC and teach ECE at College of the Canyons. I enjoy working with children, families, and students within the Early Childhood Education realm. I attended CSUN for both my B.A. in Child and Adolescent Development and my M.A. in Early Childhood Education. I have been working in the field of ECE since 2001. My experience with children ranges from birth to elementary school and includes supporting children with special needs. ECE is a lifelong learning field and I will always encourage learning and growth within myself and students. I look forward to sharing my knowledge and also learning new and innovative facts from my students. I believe every student comes from their own diverse way of upbringing and life.
I believe that every student brings a unique perspective shaped by their individual upbringing and life experiences. It is my hope that we will explore and understand how children develop along their own unique trajectories. Recognizing these differences, we should strive to tailor ECE curriculum that are based on the skills and knowledge of the children, building on their strengths.
Course Description
This course will cover the early childhood educator's role in planning and implementing a developmentally appropriate program for young children. It will include activities for various developmental domains, creating learning environments, routines, and guiding behavior. Formerly ECE-123. This course also requires observation hours for assignments.
Prerequisite: ECE 100 Introduction to Principles and Practices
Many of our courses have prerequisites. Our policy allows you to enroll in the next course, but unless your final grade in the prerequisite courses meets the minimum grade of a C, you will not be allowed to stay in the next course. Once the previous semester grades are posted you will be dropped from the more advanced course. The drop may happen after the semester has begun and could impact your ability to obtain another course.
What to Expect in this Course
Each week there will be a mixture of readings, discussions, videos, activities, and assignments. This means your participation matters. It is my hope that everyone should feel included and part of the class. Please be mindful that this course is not a self-paced course. There will be due dates and weekly reminders to keep you on track with your assignments.
You can expect the following from me:
- To create a collaborative environment in which the learning of the group can thrive.
- To stay in regular contact throughout the course by grading, emailing, videos, and announcements.
- To respect your time by having a purpose for all content and work within the course. To be clear with expectations and directions. But know some work may be very open-ended, without one right way.
- To be approachable, respectful, open-minded, and willing to be called out on my mistakes (I am human, and I do make mistakes).
- To grade your work in a timely manner and provide constructive feedback and be willing to explain how you earn your points for the class.
- To protect our learning environment by responding to any disrespect or inappropriate behavior or reports of such behavior.
Types of Assessments
There will be a variety of assessments to ensure we reach different styles of learning throughout the course. Assessments will include but are not limited to:
- Observations of children in person and/or on video
- Interview with a Master Teacher
- Creating a Learning Experience Plan (curriculum)
- Implementing a Learning Experience Plan

Other Relevant Course Information
Our curriculum focus will be for ages two to eight years old. However, we will touch base on curriculum for infants, toddlers, and school-age children. With a fully online course, you need to be prepared to check in and complete coursework at least three times a week. This will include but is not limited to:
- Engaging in discussion with peers
- Watching online observations
- Completing assignments

Management of Stress and Mental Health
Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. You can learn more about the broad range of confidential student services, including counseling and mental health services available on campus by visiting the Student Health & Wellness Center in the Student Services Building (across from the bookstore). At the Canyon Country Campus the Health Center will be in the new Student Services Building.
Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.
You can also now use the Crisis Text Line: Just text "Courage" to 741741. Someone will get back to you immediately. Its free, 24/7, and confidential.
Veterans Resource Center
The College of the Canyons Veterans Resource Center is a department within the Student Services Division at the college, created to help veterans and veteran dependents with applying to College of the Canyons, enrolling in classes, and requesting VA Education or Vocational Benefits.
