Introduction
Welcome to English 101! My name is Professor Reyes, and I will be your instructor for this term. This course will be entirely online via Canvas. We will meet both "in person" via Zoom & will have additional video lectures, as well as quizzes, discussion board assignments, and writing assignments. We will be reading two books: They Say, I Say as our main text & The Promise of a Pencil by Adam Braun. Print or digital editions are acceptable. Please have the books in your possession by the 2nd week of class.
Course Description
English 101 builds critical reading and expository writing skills through the analysis and evaluation of college-level texts and the composition of well-organized, full-length essays containing properly documented evidence.
By the end of this semester, students will be able to:
- Analyze and critically evaluate college-level texts for rhetorical and genre strategies.
- Compose persuasive, well-organized, grammatically correct essays, synthesizing properly documented and relevant evidence to develop and support a unified thesis.
What to Expect in this Course
In addition to quizzes, discussion board assignments, & reading assignments, students are required to complete a research journal, self-reflection, and three 4-5 page essays, as well as a portfolio revision of one of those essays. There will also be a written final exam at the end of the semester.
