Introduction

Welcome to the intermediate level of French. French 201 is a critically important transitional course in the study of the French language and the study of Francophone cultures. By the time you reach this level, your goal is no longer to simply meet requirements but to learn and eventually master French. Kudos to you for being here. This is a big accomplishment. I am Maggie, your instructor and I will facilitate your transition to the pro level - that is advanced knowledge.

Course Description

French 201 is the first of a two-course series in intermediate French level offering a comprehensive review and deepened understanding of the grammar and vocabulary learned in the elementary level. This course emphasizes advanced grammatical concepts and gives the student the opportunity to advance and perfect French by using it actively and frequently by means of a wide variety of activities that go way beyond review. This course further introduces the student to French customs, culture, and everyday life, and deepen the student’s understanding of the diverse cultural aspects of various Francophone societies.

What to Expect in this Course

This course requires a reliable computer, access to reliable internet connection, access to zoom and access to a reliable microphone and webcam.

This course uses an online platform called MindTap (to be purchased) and it is integrated within your CANVAS shell and includes an e-book. This platform is mandatory for all assignments conducted in this course. Weekly asynchronous lectures and assessments are conducted on Canvas.

This is a hybrid course meeting only once per week on Wednesday evenings in-person on campus, and the rest of the weekly work is conducted online asynchronously. The online asynchronous part of this course means class does not meet online live via zoom. Students are required to complete weekly lectures and assignments on a weekly basis at their convenience in lieu of seating in class during a specific time.

Students will need self-discipline to be successful in this class. This is a five (5) unit course with about 3 hours of weekly in-person instruction, and the remaining weekly two hours are conducted asynchronously at the student’s convenience. In addition, this course requires another 10 hours per week of personal studying/homework. The workload totals to an average of 15 hours of dedication per week.

Success in this course relies upon your commitment to do the coursework, assignments, and assessments by the due dates assigned. All assignments are posted on Fridays by 11:59 PM and are due the next Sunday of the coming week by 11:59 PM. This gives you ample time (more than a week) to complete all required assignments.

Types of Assessments

In-Class Engagement: Students in this class are expected to engage during every session, that is to be active participants in the learning process. The more a student engages, the better it gets as time goes by.

Homework Assignments: Weekly homework assignments are conducted on MindTap and include activities such as linguistic assignments (grammar, vocabulary) and comprehension activities (viewing videos, listening to audio); speaking activities individually; oral practice (pronunciation); literary readings and cultural assignments.

Asynchronous Assignments: Weekly asynchronous lectures and assessments are conducted on Canvas.

Written & Oral Assessments: These are formative and summative evaluations. Chapter quizzes (4 quizzes on chapters 1-4) on MindTap. Oral assessments (2 diagnostics) are conducted individually and privately with the professor.

Final Exam: A mandatory cumulative final exam (written and oral) is required to pass this course scheduled during the Final’s Week.
