Welcome to the History of Graphic Design!

I’m Ana M. Peñaranda, and I’ll be your guide and instructor on this exciting journey through the rich history of graphic design. Our exploration will highlight iconic designs, groundbreaking creators, and the cultural moments that defined them.

You’ll discover how design plays a pivotal role in influencing society and how it continues to evolve in our visually saturated, technology-driven world.

Course Description

This course surveys the origin and evolution of graphic design, including the development of typography, advertising, poster design, illustration, corporate identities, and trademarks.

What to Expect in this Course

Over the next 8 weeks, we’ll delve into exciting topics through focused learning units. Each week, you can expect to:

  • Engage with interactive video lectures, slides, and assigned readings from Meggs’ History of Graphic Design.
  • Participate in online discussions and activities about design trends and historical shifts.
  • Complete creative assignments, including quizzes and projects, that connect theory to practice.

Technology Requirements:

  • A reliable computer with internet access.
  • Access to Canvas (our online classroom) and its mobile app.
  • A webcam and microphone for certain activities.

Success in this course relies on consistent engagement. Plan to log into Canvas regularly, stay on top of deadlines, and actively participate in discussions, activities, and assignments.

Course Participation and Online Requirements

Fully Online Course
This course is conducted entirely online, with no face-to-face meetings. Reliable and consistent internet access is essential for participating in discussions, activities, completing assignments, and accessing course materials. Time Commitment:
This is an 8-week accelerated course, meaning it will move quickly as we compress a 16-week course into half the time. Expect to spend around 12–14 hours per week on lectures, readings, and assignments. Staying organized and consistent is key to your success.

The advantage is that you are in control of managing your time through the weekly content, allowing you to decide the order in which you approach the material. The course is designed to guide you smoothly through the learning process.

Since this is a 100% online course, your participation is demonstrated through the timely completion of assignments, discussions, activities, and quizzes. Consistent engagement is key to your success. Failure to maintain steady progress may result in withdrawal from the course.

The Counseling Department offers appointments online. You can schedule an appointment by visiting the Online Counseling website. Counselors can help you map out a plan to reach your educational goals as well as advise you on course selection and registration.

Management of Stress and Mental Health

Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. You can learn more about the broad range of confidential student services, including counseling and mental health services available on campus by visiting the Student Health & Wellness Center in the Student Services Building (across from the bookstore). The phone number is 661-362-3259 that you can call 24/7. You can also e mail for an appointment at StudentHealthCenter@canyons.edu. At the Canyon Country Campus the Health Center will be in the new Student Services Building.

Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.

You can also now use the Crisis Text Line: Just text "Courage" to 741741. Someone will get back to you immediately. Its free, 24/7, and confidential.

Veterans Resource Center

The College of the Canyons Veterans Resource Center is a department within the Student Services Division at the college, created to help veterans and veteran dependents with applying to College of the Canyons, enrolling in classes, and requesting VA Education or Vocational Benefits.
