My name is Laura Carlone-Mooslin and I will be your Professor! I am looking forward to meeting some of you at the live optional/extra credit Zoom meeting Wednesday August 25, at 1:00 PM. I will post a link to the meeting in the 'Announcements', in an introductory email for those enrolled, and it will appear in the first Unit-Module. You can  and should view a recording of this meeting and all subsequent meetings if you cannot attend live.

 

We will need to help each other navigate through these unprecedented educational times...I have done everything possible to help you succeed in this course and I am mindful of the unique and stressful situation we are all facing.

Course Description

Welcome to History 111: US History 1 section # 56649 Fall Session. This course is a full 16 week session. This class is asynchronous, meaning that we do not have required meetings but in the furtherance of student success. I will be providing extra credit live meetings with overview lectures and discussion. The optional zoom meetings will be each every Wednesday from 1-4 and will be recorded for later viewing and are required content for the course.

 

I will also be providing set office hours on Mondays from 12-3, you can contact me for links.

What to Expect in this Course

Our course management system is Canvas. Please use either Chrome or Firefox to access the course. (Do not use Internet Explorer or Edge).

 

This class is asynchronous which means there are not required meetings, but we will have optional/extra credit lectures which will be recorded for later required viewing.

 

The live extra credit Zoom lectures will be Wednesdays from 1-4.

 

Once enrolled in the course:

 

Start on the Introductory Module as soon as possible: Begin working on the Introductory Assignments. Start by viewing the items in the introductory module. All pertinent information is provided including your syllabus. Click each module item and read through/complete each.

 

Unit Modules: All information you need can be found under the MODULES tab on Canvas. The course is organized into Unit Modules. All items must be viewed in order, and some items may have prerequisites, or requirements before allowing you to move forward through the course. The titles for all the Units for the semester are visible, but the specific content will not be until we have reached that point in the course.

 

Syllabus and Detailed Daily Schedule: Please read the syllabus and Course Map (detailed weekly schedule) carefully as it provides a pathway of success in this course. You will want to know the calendar and due dates of major projects early so you are not surprised later in the course.

 

Introductory Assignments: Please acquaint yourself with course assignments and due dates. Make sure to get started as soon as possible on the multiple Introductory Assignments, you will only have until the end of the first week to complete them.

Drop Policy: You can be dropped from the class for the following reasons:

 

 

1. If you are enrolled in the class but do not participate in any online activities during the first week and you do not make any effort to contact me you will be dropped.

 

 

2. If you do not log into the Canvas for over 3 days in a row during the course of the semester, I reserve the right to drop you from the class. I can see your total time online as well as your last log-in.

 

 

 

Types of Assessments

Assignments and Assessments:

 

There are required but simple introductory assignments, helping you to acclimate to the course. You will have 3 exams, the lowest grade of the first 2 will be dropped. There are 3 simple but important exam preparation assignments to help you do well on the exams. You will have two one-paragraph assignments for each unit module.

The Counseling Department offers appointments online. You can schedule an appointment by visiting the Online Counseling website. Counselors can help you map out a plan to reach your educational goals as well as advise you on course selection and registration.

Management of Stress and Mental Health

Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. You can learn more about the broad range of confidential student services, including counseling and mental health services available on campus by visiting the Student Health & Wellness Center in the Student Services Building (across from the bookstore). The phone number is 661-362-3259 that you can call 24/7. You can also e mail for an appointment at StudentHealthCenter@canyons.edu. At the Canyon Country Campus the Health Center will be in the new Student Services Building.

Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.

You can also now use the Crisis Text Line: Just text "Courage" to 741741. Someone will get back to you immediately. Its free, 24/7, and confidential.

Veterans Resource Center

The College of the Canyons Veterans Resource Center is a department within the Student Services Division at the college, created to help veterans and veteran dependents with applying to College of the Canyons, enrolling in classes, and requesting VA Education or Vocational Benefits.
