Introduction
Hello Student,
My name is Anthony Galvan and I will be your instructor for this semester. I have my Bachelors degree in Native American Studies and History of Latin America from UC Riverside. I received my Masters Degree in Humanities from Mount St. Mary's University in Los Angeles. Hopefully by the end of this course you will have a better understanding of World History from different perspectives.
You must complete the first assignment by 11:59 PST on the first day of the semester otherwise you will be dropped from the course. More details will be sent out to you through email and Announcements on Canvas.
Course Description
This course examines the major historical trends of world history—from the earliest known civilizations through the 16th century. Particular emphasis will be given to Greek and Roman culture, society, and political developments; the emergence of major world religions, including Hinduism, Confucianism, Christianity, Islam and others; the rise of political institutions (utilizing a comparative approach); and the development of social practices, world literature, the status of women, and the influence that one culture and tradition has an another.

This class will have 3 quizzes, 1 Book Review, and 5 discussion posts. All work is to be in your own words and not copied off the internet.
Types of Assessments
Quizzes: Each quiz will consist of 20 multiple-choice questions, 10 short response questions, and 1 essay question. A study guide will be provided before each exam as an Announcement.
Book Review: AZTECS: A VERY SHORT INTRODUCTION: 105 POINTS (GUIDELINES WILL BE POSTED ON ASSIGNMENTS TAB) Any late book review papers will be deducted 10 points for every calendar day late. Turnitin feature will be enabled.
5 Discussion Posts: You will have discussion post questions based on a chapter from your textbook The Earth and Its People. In addition, you will have to respond to another student on the discussion post board giving positive feedback. Remember that there will be two different due dates for the initial post and reply response.

Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. You can learn more about the broad range of confidential student services, including counseling and mental health services available on campus by visiting the Student Health & Wellness Center in the Student Services Building (across from the bookstore). At the Canyon Country Campus the Health Center will be in the new Student Services Building.
Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.
You can also now use the Crisis Text Line: Just text "Courage" to 741741. Someone will get back to you immediately. Its free, 24/7, and confidential.
Veterans Resource Center
The College of the Canyons Veterans Resource Center is a department within the Student Services Division at the college, created to help veterans and veteran dependents with applying to College of the Canyons, enrolling in classes, and requesting VA Education or Vocational Benefits.
