Introduction

I have been in Law Enforcement since 1996.  I started my career working in local law enforcement in New York.  I became a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army Reserve, Military Police Corps and became a Police Officer with the U.S. Secret Service Uniformed Division in 1997 where I was assigned to the White House and Patrol.  In 1999, I became a Special Agent in the U.S. Secret Service where I served in Los Angeles and Washington D.C. with assignments in organized crime, counter-terrorism, protective intelligence and the Presidential Protective Division.  I am currently an Assistant Special Agent in Charge with the Department of Defense, overseeing approximately 70 Criminal Investigators, Analysts and Support Personnel on the West Coast.  I have collateral duties as a Firearms Instructor and Technical Operations/Electronic Surveillance specialist.

I hold a B.A. in Criminal Justice from SUNY-Albany, a Masters of Policy Management from Georgetown University, and a Juris Doctorate from Taft Law School.  I am also an FAA certified helicopter pilot, commercially licensed small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) pilot, and a certified Rescue SCUBA diver.

Course Description

Examines the emerging trends of sUAS, otherwise known as “drones", in modern public safety,

Aligns with the FAA remote pilot exam for commercial drone operators.

What to Expect in this Course

Understanding the hectic schedule of law enforcement, it is understood that work, court or family obligations must take precedent.  However, students should meet all required deadlines or contact the instructor in advance. 

Types of Assessments

Grading is based on discussions and multiple choice quizzes and exams modelled after the FAA sUAS Remote Pilot Exam:

  • 50% Weekly Online Written Assignments and Discussions
  • 25% Midterm
  • 25% Final Exam

Management of Stress and Mental Health

Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. You can learn more about the broad range of confidential student services, including counseling and mental health services available on campus by visiting the Student Health & Wellness Center in the Student Services Building (across from the bookstore). The phone number is 661-362-3259 that you can call 24/7. You can also e mail for an appointment at StudentHealthCenter@canyons.edu. At the Canyon Country Campus the Health Center will be in the new Student Services Building.

Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.

You can also now use the Crisis Text Line: Just text "Courage" to 741741. Someone will get back to you immediately. Its free, 24/7, and confidential.

Veterans Resource Center

The College of the Canyons Veterans Resource Center is a department within the Student Services Division at the college, created to help veterans and veteran dependents with applying to College of the Canyons, enrolling in classes, and requesting VA Education or Vocational Benefits.
