Introduction
Welcome to my Math 104: Precalculus class. My name is Anupama Chandran and I will be your instructor for this course. Please feel free to email me if you have questions or need help with anything regarding the course. This orientation letter will provide you with helpful information as you prepare for your class.
This course is taught in an online Live format, which means I will be teaching the materials during the scheduled class time synchronously using Zoom. I will be posting important announcements regarding weekly assignments, deadlines etc. using the Canvas system. Please make sure to login to Canvas and check the Announcements to see what I have posted for the class to begin with from Day 1. The information regarding the Zoom meeting will be posted in Canvas under "ZOOM" tab. The exam will be administered on campus during scheduled days.
Course Description
This course analyzes equations, inequalities, functions, systems of equations, conic sections, zeros of polynomial equations and additional topics in preparation for calculus.
What to Expect in this Course
It is your responsibility to keep yourself informed by attending all the regular classes and often check Canvas announcements.
- We will be using Zoom for all lecture meetings. So a reliable computer and strong/consistent internet access is needed. (Required)
- Basic knowledge of canvas and Access to Canvas (Required)
- Up-to-date internet browser, Chrome is preferred for Canvas.
- For class meetings and office hours, mic & webcam is strongly recommended.
- Exams will be administered on campus and more details will be provided on the first day of the semester.
- Word processing program (Microsoft Word), and/or PDF.
- Knowledge to scan documents using a scanning app like Adobescan/Genius scan/Camscanner and save it as a PDF and upload to canvas if needed(for example, to get credit for weekly homework).
- Valid MyCanyons email account.
- Basic document creation and handling (how to cut/copy/paste from one document to another).
- Be able to create and save documents in Microsoft Word and as a pdf file, how to attach documents to email, messages and discussion posts.
Types of Assessments
- This course uses canvas to provide any important announcements related to our class. All homework schedules, chapter exam info and final exam info will be posted in Canvas and your handwritten work will be submitted for grading through Canvas except for exams. More information about exams, assignments and lectures will be given on the first day of class. The assessments will be done through

Other Relevant Course Information
- Day 1: There will be mandatory Zoom meeting during regular class times on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Especially on Day 1, please make sure that you are present in class, as I will be welcoming you to class and I will be giving a short introduction about the course and what to expect during the rest of the semester. Being present in the class confirms your attendance.
- Typically on the first day of a class, your instructor will say each name on the official roster and make sure whether the student is present. A student who is not present on the first day is dropped from the class as a “No Show” and a wait-listed student is added in their place, unless I am notified in advance with a valid reason.
- You must maintain courtesy and respect in your e-mails and I will respond to e-mails within 24 hours. To avoid unnecessary e-mails and delay, you should check the Canvas site daily for any class updates. Make sure your emails include your name and your class in the subject line when you are sending messages and I prefer you send the messages through canvas Inbox after our first meeting day of class.
- You will be expected to participate in live class sessions and discussions. Live participation can be individual or through group work.

Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. At the Canyon Country Campus the Health Center will be in the new Student Services Building.
Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.

Veterans Resource Center
