Introduction
Welcome to the Online/OnlineLive Version of Math 104 at College of the Canyons. The purpose of this letter is to give you an overview of the course.
There will be both synchronous and asynchronous meetings for this course. We will have one zoom meeting each week on Wednesdays for section 57976 at 8:25am and Thursdays for section 57977 at 8:25am, as provided in the schedule. You are required to purchase the following for the class: Webassign access code for Precalculus by Cohen, Lee, and Sklar (7th ed.)
Required materials:
- A computer (laptop or desktop computer, with a webcam, a microphone, and speakers);
- A reliable connection to the internet to join zoom sessions and take online exams;
- A secondary device that you will use to join Zoom video conferencing during exams and scan your hand-written work;
- Access to Webassign, which includes the course eBook and online homework
Course Description
This course is designed to develop skills to analyzes equations, inequalities, liner, quadratic, radical, rational, exponential and logarithmic functions, systems of equations, conic sections, zeros of polynomial equations and additional topics in preparation for calculus.
MATH 104 STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Graph polynomial, rational, logarithmic, exponential, and trigonometric functions and solve equations involving these functions.
What to Expect in this Course
The textbook for this course is: Webassign access code for Precalculus by Cohen, Lee, and Sklar (7th ed.)
A hard copy of the textbook is not required. The only required material is Webassign student access code and your COC email account. You can either purchase the access code online through COC Bookstore or from Cengage’s website on the first day of the semester when you login to Canvas.
You must attend the first class meeting via Zoom on the scheduled on August 25th for section #57976 and August 26th for section 57977 at 8:25AM. Any student absent on that day will be dropped unless I am notified in advance with a valid reason.
Your course material will consist of the online textbook, video lectures, virtual lectures, worksheets, and other online resources.
You will probably spend at least fifteen hours per week for this course and even longer because of the nature of online courses and dealing with technology. You will have online homework that needs to be completed weekly. I will be available to address any questions you have.
To organize our course materials and assignments, we will use Canvas. The detailed instructions will be under Modules tab.
In general, we will meet synchronously once a week for discussions and classwork. Exams will also be given during your scheduled class time online. During the exams, you will be asked to have your webcams on. You will be asked to take an oral assessment if there is no webcam provided.
A typical weekly schedule: watch a series of lecture videos covering one section while taking notes, organize and review the lecture notes as necessary, and do assigned exercises from the section covered. Attend scheduled zoom meeting to discuss the materials for the week.
