 My name is Siranush Grigoryan, and I will be your instructor for this course. This orientation letter will provide you with helpful information as you prepare for our class.


There will be both synchronous ZOOM meetings during scheduled class days/hours and in-person exam, and in-person Final Exam. Please check in-person exam days in the schedule. 

Course Description

This course is designed to develop skills to analyzes equations, inequalities, liner, quadratic, radical, rational, exponential and logarithmic functions, systems of equations, conic sections, zeros of polynomial equations and additional topics in preparation for calculus.       


Graph polynomial, rational, logarithmic, exponential, and trigonometric functions and solve equations involving these functions.


What to Expect in this Course

The textbook for this course is: Webassign access code for Precalculus by Cohen, Lee, and Sklar (7th ed.)


A hard copy of the textbook is not required. The only required material is Webassign student access code and your COC email account. You can either purchase the access code online through COC Bookstore or from Cengage’s website on the first day of the semester when you login to Canvas.


You must attend class meetings via Zoom as in schedule


If you do not log in to Canvas and do the required assignments due in the first week of the semester or contact the instructor via email to share that you’re having issues with accessing Canvas by the required date and time, you will be dropped from the course as a “No Show.” If you are not active during the semester for longer than one week, you may be dropped from the course. However, it is your responsibility to officially drop the course.

If you are not active during the semester for longer than one week, you may be dropped from the course.  Please make sure that you are staying on top of all Canvas assignments as there will be no makeup assignments for any reason.

You will probably spend at least ten hours per week. You will have online homework that needs to be completed weekly. I will be available to address any questions you have.

To organize our course materials and assignments, we will use Canvas. The detailed instructions will be under Modules tab.

What You Need to Know About Required Course Materials

  • We will be using StatCrunch as our statistical software.  See for video help. 
  • Canvas:  Our course will be using the Canvas course management system to support our teaching and learning goals starting on the first day of the course.
    • You can access our course on the first day of class at  using your MyCanyons username as your login.   If you have never used Canvas before, your default password is “students”.  You are automatically added to the course by the school system as long as you are enrolled in the class. 
    • After login, click on Dashboard or Courses to locate our class. Then click on the title of our class.
    • If you haven’t done so already, change your Canvas password.
    • From the left menu bar, click on Account → Settings → Edit
    • From this window, you can also enter an email address and/or text preferences if you would like to receive text messages for assignments, deadlines, and due dates.
    • Then go to Notifications. On this screen, you may edit what you receive from Canvas and the method of contact.
    • Click on Account → Notifications. Under Notification Preferences, you can control the method and way Canvas contacts you with reminders of course deadlines and activity. These can be updated/changed at any time.

  • You must have a reliable computer with reliable, consistent Internet access
  • You must have an up-to-date internet browser, Chrome is preferred for Canvas.
  • Access to a word processing program (such as Microsoft Word) and slideshow presentation program (such as Microsoft PowerPoint), you may use Google Docs and Google Slides instead.
  • Valid MyCanyons email account that you will regularly check
  • Basic document creation and handling (how to cut/copy/paste from one document to another.
  • Be able to create and save documents in Microsoft Word and as a pdf file, how to attach documents to email messages and discussion posts, how to create and save a graph/chart/diagram, etc. in Microsoft Excel or Microsoft PowerPoint.

Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.

You can also now use the Crisis Text Line: Just text "Courage" to 741741. Someone will get back to you immediately. Its free, 24/7, and confidential.

Veterans Resource Center

The College of the Canyons Veterans Resource Center is a department within the Student Services Division at the college, created to help veterans and veteran dependents with applying to College of the Canyons, enrolling in classes, and requesting VA Education or Vocational Benefits.
