Introduction
By the end of this course, I hope you will gain a greater understanding of the subject and be motivated to pursue further study in this area. My objective is to enhance your K-6 math abilities, ensuring you feel confident and capable when it comes to teaching math in a classroom environment.
Course Description
Upon completing the course, students will be able to examine and articulate various methods for performing the four basic operations—addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division—across whole numbers, integers, and rational numbers. Additionally, students will review K-6 lesson materials and develop a detailed K-6 lesson plan.
What to Expect in this Course
This course will be conducted via Canvas and ConferZoom during the scheduled class times. The Zoom link for our meetings, as well as for all subsequent sessions, will remain the same. You can access the Zoom meetings through the link provided on the course's Canvas page.
You will participate in the course through the College of the Canyons Learning Management System, CANVAS.
The course will meet online for 16 weeks during the Spring session. To participate, you’ll need a computer with internet access and Google Chrome as your browser. Your computer must also have a webcam, microphone, and speakers, and you’ll need to have Zoom installed to take the class. Some course materials will be available in PDF format.

Technology Requirements:
- Be sure you have reliable Internet access as you will spend a lot of time in Canvas.
- In addition, you will need a scientific calculator for some exercises and exams. Your phone and PC may already have one.
- Assignments will be submitted through Canvas
- Computer access with internet and Chrome as a browser, and able to enable Proctorio Chrome Extension for exams
- The computer must have speakers, webcam, and microphone
- StatCrunch access
- Basic or Scientific Calculator, may use calculator on computer
What You Need to Know About Required Course Materials
- Canvas: Our course will be using the Canvas course management system to support our teaching and learning goals starting on the first day of the course.
- You can access our course on the first day of class at https://coc.instructure.com/login/canvas using your MyCanyons username as your login. If you have never used Canvas before, your default password is “students”. You are automatically added to the course by the school system as long as you are enrolled in the class.
- After login, click on Dashboard or Courses to locate our class. Then click on the title of our class.
- If you haven’t done so already, change your Canvas password.
- From the left menu bar, click on Account → Settings → Edit
- From this window, you can also enter an email address and/or text preferences if you would like to receive text messages for assignments, deadlines, and due dates.
- Then go to Notifications. On this screen, you may edit what you receive from Canvas and the method of contact.
- Click on Account → Notifications. Under Notification Preferences, you can control the method and way Canvas contacts you with reminders of course deadlines and activity. These can be updated/changed at any time.

- You must have a reliable computer with reliable, consistent Internet access
- You must have an up-to-date internet browser, Chrome is preferred for Canvas.
- Access to a word processing program (such as Microsoft Word) and slideshow presentation program (such as Microsoft PowerPoint), you may use Google Docs and Google Slides instead.
- Valid MyCanyons email account that you will regularly check
- Basic document creation and handling (how to cut/copy/paste from one document to another.
- Be able to create and save documents in Microsoft Word and as a pdf file, how to attach documents to email messages and discussion posts, how to create and save a graph/chart/diagram, etc. in Microsoft Excel or Microsoft PowerPoint.

The Counseling Department offers appointments online. You can schedule an appointment by visiting the Online Counseling website. Counselors can help you map out a plan to reach your educational goals as well as advise you on course selection and registration.
Management of Stress and Mental Health
Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. You can learn more about the broad range of confidential student services, including counseling and mental health services available on campus by visiting the Student Health & Wellness Center in the Student Services Building (across from the bookstore). At the Canyon Country Campus the Health Center will be in the new Student Services Building.
Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.
You can also now use the Crisis Text Line: Just text "Courage" to 741741. Someone will get back to you immediately. Its free, 24/7, and confidential.
Veterans Resource Center
