Course Length:
  • 16 Week

Introduction

I'm Anahit Asadyan, your instructor for Introductory Statistics with Support.

Thank you for considering me to guide you on this 16-week journey and show you why learning statistics is critical for your everyday life.

In our class, you will develop invaluable skills to analyze data for decision making.  My hope is that you will be able to apply these skills as you make important decisions for yourself and your loved ones.

For those who are quickly browsing through letters, here’s a brief summary:

  • You must register for both Math 090 and its paired Math 140 course.  You are not able to register for just the Math 140 course (unless you choose my 100% online section)
  • We have weekly online Zoom meetings (required) because my hope is that you’ll take away more from this class by learning together rather than alone.
  • You'll need reliable access to a desktop or laptop computer with a microphone and stable internet service.  It would also be very helpful to have either a webcam or smartphone with a camera.  Relying only on a tablet and/or smartphone for this class will not work.
  • Yes, it's a lot of work.  Yes, you need to write.  Yes, you will give presentations to me and your classmates, but don't let this scare you away.  The expectation is that we will help and support each other to succeed by the end of the semester.

Before our class officially begins, I will email registered students with updated information and more details about our course(s).

I am using the Canvas course together with MyStatLab management system for this course. Please visit the Canvas Student Support page, which provides instructions for logging in, finding your course, and confirming your email to receive Canvas notifications.

I recommend that you log in to Canvas to read the Syllabus and participate in the Check-in Discussion, which is in the Discussions area of the course. The course navigation menu includes links to the Syllabus, Discussions, and to the Modules.

Course Description

We will use Introductory Statistics Exploring The World Through Data by Robert Gould, Collen Ryan with MyStatLab access code.

E-book comes with the MyStatLab access and the hard copy of textbook is not required.

In this course, we will learn the process of collecting and analyzing numerical data in large quantities, especially for the purpose of inferring proportions and means in a whole from those in a representative sample. Please watch a short video that talks about the role that statistics plays in our daily life.

What to Expect in this Course

This course will be using Canvas course management system to support our teaching and learning goals starting on the first day of the class. If you are not active in the Canvas course in the first 4 days of the semester you will be dropped from the course. Please make sure that you are staying on top of all Canvas assignments as there will be no makeup assignments for any reason. Your participation in the class will be assessed through Discussions, Exams, and the Group Project. Your project is expected to be completed using statistical software StatCrunch. The access to this software is complementary with the purchase of the MyStatLab access code.

The electronic version of the textbook is sufficient and comes with MyStatLab access. The access code can be purchased directly from the website at

www.pearson.com/mylab. Please do not purchase the access code before our first class meeting.

I strongly suggest you take advantage of the two weeks free trial version that permits you to use the site free of charge. This allows you to see if this way of accessing textbook and completing your homework is suitable for you. Please review introductory flier on Canvas Module "MyStatLab Registration Intsructions".

Also, you're expected to regularly complete homework assignments on MyStatLab. For more information please see the course Syllabus, available on Canvas.

Types of Assessments

Here are the components that your grade consists of:

  • 4 Tests (55%)
  • Comprehensive Final Exam (20%)
  • Homework (15%)
  • Project (10%)
