Introduction
Welcome to Introductory Statistics course. My name is Andranik Hakobyan, and I will be your instructor for this course. Feel free to email me if you have questions or need help. This orientation letter will provide you with helpful information as you prepare for our class. This course is taught 100% online(Online/Zoom Synchronous).
Course Description
Math 140 examines statistical methods including empirical and theoretical frequency distributions, sampling, estimation, hypothesis testing, correlation, regression, probability, counting techniques, and computer-based statistical software.
Student Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to apply basic statistical procedures, including the collection, analysis, and reporting of data designed to test a research hypothesis, as well as demonstrate the appropriate use of computer-based statistical software.

Technology Needs
- Up-to-date Internet browser, such as Mozilla Firefox or Chrome
- Word Reliable computer with reliable, consistent Internet access
- processing program (Microsoft Word), slideshow presentation program (Microsoft PowerPoint) and spreadsheet program (Microsoft Excel).
- Valid MyCanyons e-mail account that you will regularly check
- Basic knowledge of Canvas
- Access to a webcam or smartphone for video conferencing

- Homework Online – Needs to be completed daily.
- Online Quizzes – Need to be completed by the due date

Textbook Information
You will need an access code for Pearson MyStatLab. Please do not purchase anything before the semester starts. Electronic version of the textbook is available online once you login to our MyStatLab course, so you do not need to purchase a hard copy of the textbook. Without the Access Code you will not be able to complete any of the necessary work and will be dropped from the course. As a courtesy, the publisher allows students free temporary access for two weeks, so my recommendation is not to purchase an access code until the 3rd week of the semester. Also, we will use statistical software called statcrunch. To access the online textbook, statcrunch, and homework assignments you need to register on Pearson Mystatlab (approximate cost for course material is $80-$90).

Canvas And Zoom Meeting
You can access our course on the first day of class at https://coc.instructure.com/login/canvas using your MyCanyons username as your log in. If you have never used Canvas before, your default password is “students”. You are automatically added to the course by the school system as long as you are enrolled in the class. Please also use the following website at cv.canyons.edu . Here, you can also access Canvas user guides with helpful tips for navigating and using Canvas. The Counseling Department offers appointments online. You can schedule an appointment by visiting the Online Counseling website. Counselors can help you map out a plan to reach your educational goals as well as advise you on course selection and registration.
Management of Stress and Mental Health
Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. You can learn more about the broad range of confidential student services, including counseling and mental health services available on campus by visiting the Student Health & Wellness Center in the Student Services Building (across from the bookstore). At the Canyon Country Campus the Health Center will be in the new Student Services Building.
Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.
You can also now use the Crisis Text Line: Just text "Courage" to 741741. Someone will get back to you immediately. Its free, 24/7, and confidential.
Veterans Resource Center
The College of the Canyons Veterans Resource Center is a department within the Student Services Division at the college, created to help veterans and veteran dependents with applying to College of the Canyons, enrolling in classes, and requesting VA Education or Vocational Benefits.
