Introduction
Welcome to Math 140 Introductory Statistics - hybrid class. My name is Anupama Chandran, and I will be your instructor for this course. Please feel free to email me if you have questions or need help with anything regarding the course. This orientation letter will provide you with helpful information as you prepare for your class.
This course is taught in the hybrid modality, in which there will be few on-campus meetings and complete the assigned coursework independently online. More information about assignments, exams and lectures will be given on the canvas page which will be available on the first day of the semester in canvas and also during the first on-campus session. I will be posting important announcements about the course using the Canvas system. Please make sure to login to Canvas before the first day of the semester to check the Announcements to see what I have posted for the class to begin with.
Course Description
This course examines statistical methods including collecting data, bias, experimental design, exploratory data analysis, regression, probability, sampling and theoretical distributions, population estimations, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, categorical and quantitative association tests and how to use computer-based statistical software (statkey and statcato).
What to Expect in this Course
This is a Hybrid course, which means you will be learning a lot of the material online along with attending my weekly class meetings. I will be using a "flipped classroom" method, which means you will be watching online video lectures posted in canvas and will be doing problems in class with me during the on-campus meeting session.
Required Materials
- Computer and internet access. (Required)
- Access to Canvas (Required)
- Book/Pencil/Pen/Calculator
I will provide weekly updates and in-person help during our weekly class meetings. Our class time will be spent on summary lectures highlighting important concepts, Q&A, classwork, taking quizzes and/or taking exams.
All exams will be administered in person during regular class time on designated dates.
Every student is expected to make serious time commitment for this course every week, including a few hours for watching lecture videos and a lot more additional hours for learning the material and doing homework exercises. More time may be needed for exam preparation. A homework set is generally due at the end of each week.
A typical weekly schedule: In addition to attending weekly class meeting, you have to watch (in your own time outside the classroom) a series of lecture videos covering one or two sections, while taking notes, organize and review the lecture notes as necessary, take online/on-campus quizzes, and do assigned exercises from the sections covered. A significant amount of time will be given in class to work on practice problems under my supervision. Before each exam, you will go through review guides and review your homework. Then come in and take the proctored exam in person during the face-to-face class meeting. Those with special accommodations approved by the AAC (Academic Accommodations Center) may be allowed to take exams in TLC (The Learning Center).
Assignment, and Project Submission Information
Students will be submitting assignments, and projects to the instructor using Canvas system. Also, there will be discussion assignments every week. More information provided in the syllabus.

If you do not participate in the quiz, you will be dropped from the course, unless I am notified in advance of a valid reason.
