Introduction
Welcome to my Math 090/140 Introductory Statistics with support class. My name is Asawari Kelkar. I will be your instructor for this course. Please feel free to email me at Asawari.Kelkar@canyons.edu if you have questions or need help with anything regarding the course.
Course Description
Math 140 examines statistical methods including collecting data, bias, experimental design, exploratory data analysis, regression, probability, sampling and theoretical distributions, population estimations, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, categorical and quantitative association tests, and how to use computer-based statistical software.
MATH 090 presents basic mathematical concepts and exploratory data analysis skills that are helpful in Introductory Statistics.
What to Expect in this Course
Week 1: You are required to complete required assignments on canvas within 48 hours after the class begins. If you are not able to complete the required assignments due to any reason beyond your control, then you are required to contact me via email or by attending zoom meeting. If you do not complete the assignment, and you do not contact me, then you will be dropped from the course as a “No Show.”
If you are not active during the semester for longer than one week, you may be dropped from the course. Please make sure that you are staying on top of all Canvas assignments as there will be no makeup assignments for any reason.
You will be expected to keep up with the course by watching lecture videos (while taking notes) and submitting all assignments due through Canvas.
Time Commitment:
Every student is expected to make a serious time commitment for this course every week. You should set aside time for completing assignments, and many additional hours for learning the material and doing homework (individually or in online study groups).
Technology Requirements:
- Access to reliable computer and Internet as you will spend a lot of time in Canvas.
- Assignments, exams, quizzes and projects will be submitted through Canvas
- Access to Zoom for optional meetings.
- Access to power point or google presentation for projects.
- Assignments: 10% of your grade
- Projects: 10% of your grade
- Discussion Board: 10%
- Quizzes: 10% of your grade
- Midterm Exams 45% of your grade
- Final Exam: 15% of your grade
Assignments: Weekly assignments given through Canvas will be worth 10% of your grade. Assignments will be based on the learned course material.
Discussion Boards: Biweekly affective domain discussions given through Canvas will be worth 10% of your grade.
Projects: There will be at least two course projects for this class. They will be turned in via Canvas as power point or google sides with voice recorded explanation per slide. Projects will be worth 10 % of your grade.
Quizzes: Several quizzes will be given through Canvas. Quizzes will consist of questions such as but not limited to multiple choice questions or short answer questions.
Exams: There will be at least 3 midterm exams given through canvas worth 45% of your grade. Exams will consist of questions such as but not limited to multiple choice questions or short answer questions.
Final Exam: The final exam is cumulative and will be worth 15% of your grade. It will be given during the last week of the semester through canvas.
Software Information:
StatKey and Statcato
- We will be using Zoom for our class meetings as well as office hours. Please see https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/206618765-Zoom-video-tutorials for some video tutorials on how to use Zoom.
- StatKey: This software is free and does not need to be downloaded. To access StatKey, go to www.lock5stat.com and click on the StatKey button.
- Statcato: We will also occasionally use another free program called Statcato. If you wish to use Statcato on your laptop or home computer, go to www.statcato.org and use the Java Web Start function to open the program on your computer. Statcato does not need to be saved. There are Java Web Start instructions for MAC or PC on the website www.matt-teachout.org at the top of the Statistics page. Note: You do not have to save Statcato on your home computers. Problem sets in the textbook already have the Statcato printouts and graphs, ready for analysis.
- Canvas: Our course will be using the Canvas course management system to support our teaching and learning goals starting on the first day of the course.
- You can access our course on the first day of class at https://coc.instructure.com/login/canvas using your MyCanyons username as your login. If you have never used Canvas before, your default password is “students”. You are automatically added to the course by the school system as long as you are enrolled in the class.
- After login, click on Dashboard or Courses to locate our class. Then click on the title of our class.
- If you haven’t done so already, change your Canvas password.
- From the left menu bar, click on Account → Settings → Edit
- From this window, you can also enter an email address and/or text preferences if you would like to receive text messages for assignments, deadlines, and due dates.
- Then go to Notifications. On this screen, you may edit what you receive from Canvas and the method of contact.
- Click on Account → Notifications. Under Notification Preferences, you can control the method and way Canvas contacts you with reminders of course deadlines and activity. These can be updated/changed at any time.

- A reliable computer with reliable, consistent Internet access
- Up-to-date internet browser, Chrome is preferred for Canvas.
- Word processing program (Microsoft Word), slideshow presentation program (Microsoft PowerPoint), and spreadsheet program (Microsoft Excel).
- Valid MyCanyons email account that you will regularly check
- Basic knowledge of Canvas
- Basic document creation and handling (how to cut/copy/paste from one document to another.
- Be able to create and save documents in Microsoft Word and as a pdf file, how to attach documents to email messages and discussion posts, how to create and save a graph/chart/diagram, etc. in Microsoft Excel or Microsoft PowerPoint.

Click on either the “Pre-Algebra” or the “Int Alg for Stats” tabs for access to the Math 090 statistics support materials and the free OER textbooks Preparing for Algebra and Statistics (3rd edition) and Intro to Data Analysis (1st edition) by Matt Teachout.

Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.
