Welcome to Math 140, Introductory Statistics online. My name is Charlie Johnson, and I will be your instructor for this course.  This orientation letter will provide you with helpful information as you prepare for our class.

Course Description

Math 140 examines statistical methods including collecting data, bias, experimental design, exploratory data analysis, regression, probability, sampling and theoretical distributions, population estimations, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, categorical and quantitative association tests and how to use computer-based statistical software.

What to Expect in this Course

FIRST DAY LOGIN

You are required to login on the first day of class. If you do not log in to Canvas and do the required assignments due on the first and second day of the semester or contact the instructor via email to share that you’re having issues with accessing Canvas by the required date and time, you will be dropped from the course as a “No Show.”

If you are not active for an extended period of time (typically one week, but this can vary depending on the length of the course) during the semester/term, you may be dropped from the course.  Please make sure that you are staying on top of all Canvas/MyLab assignments as there will be no makeup assignments for any reason. If you are having issues staying active, make sure to communicate your issues with your instructor. 

REGISTERING FOR MYLAB

You are required to purchase an access code for MyLab. This will give you access to the homework, quizzes, exams, and StatCrunch. You can purchase the access code from the bookstore or online. You will be required to register for MyLab immediately once the course starts. You have the opportunity to obtain temporary complementary access for 2 weeks. Directions for doing this will be given to you in Canvas. 

HONORLOCK REMOTE PROCTORING

All quizzes and exams will be remotely proctored using Honorlock. You will be required to authenticate yourself before you can access the proctored quiz or exam. You must have a webcam and microphone.  You will not be able to access any other websites besides, except the quiz or exam and Statcrunch, when taking a proctored quiz or exam. You will have an Honorlock Quiz assigned to complete to give you practice using Honorlock.

TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENTS

  • Be sure you have reliable Internet access as you will spend a lot of time in Canvas and MyLab.
  • In addition, you will need a scientific calculator for some exercises and exams. A TI 30X is a good affordable one. 
  • Assignments will be submitted through MyLab and your grade will migrate over to the Canvas gradebook. Your current class grade will be displayed in Canvas. 
  • Computer access with internet and Chrome as a browser, and able to enable the online proctoring program for quizzes and exams
  • The computer must have speakers, a webcam, and a microphone
  • StatCrunch access. You will gain access once you purchase your MyLab access code. 

 

Project

There will be at least one course project for this class. It will be

  • Turned in via Canvas
  • Group/Individual project
  • A PowerPoint project

A typical weekly schedule:

Watch lecture videos, read the textbook, and complete assignments for that lesson outlined in that week(s) module displayed in Canvas.

During a week when you have an exam, you will have access to a practice exam. Your exam will be timed and proctored using an online monitoring program which will be outlined in Canvas. Your window for the exam will be at least one day. 

Time Commitment:

Every student is expected to make a serious time commitment to this course every week.  You should set aside time for watching videos, reading the textbook, completing assignments, and many additional hours for learning the material and doing homework, quizzes, and exams.  Homework and quizzes will be assigned weekly via Canvas modules.

 

Quizzes

There will be at least 11 quizzes. Quizzes will be proctored remotely using an online monitoring program. You must have a computer, webcam, chrome browser, and microphone.  Tablets and phones may not be used with an online monitoring program.

Exams:

There will be at least four exams, plus a cumulative final exam. Exams will be proctored remotely using an online monitoring program. You must have a computer, webcam, chrome browser, and microphone.  Tablets and phones may not be used with an online monitoring program.  You may take the exam in person at TLC or another approved proctoring location.  Please contact me several weeks before the exam if you wish to have a proctoring location approved as it.

Cheating:

Suspected incidents of cheating will result in receiving a zero on the exam or assignment, as well as being reported to the Student Conduct office where other consequences will be determined.  Any suspected incidents of cheating on exams may result in students' option to take exams via remote proctoring being revoked and the student will be required to take exams and assessments in-person through the College of the Canyons Testing Center.

Additional information: 

  • We will be using StatCrunch as our statistical software.  See https://www.statcrunch.com/help for video help. 
  • Canvas:  Our course will be using the Canvas course management system to support our teaching and learning goals starting on the first day of the course.
    • You can access our course on the first day of class at https://coc.instructure.com/login/canvas  using your MyCanyons username and password as your login. You are automatically added to the course by the school system as long as you are enrolled in the class. 
    • After login, click on Dashboard or Courses to locate our class. Then click on the title of our class.
    • If you haven’t done so already, change your Canvas password.
    • From the left menu bar, click on Account → Settings → Edit
    • From this window, you can also enter an email address and/or text preferences if you would like to receive text messages for assignments, deadlines, and due dates.
    • Then go to Notifications. On this screen, you may edit what you receive from Canvas and the method of contact.
    • Click on Account → Notifications. Under Notification Preferences, you can control the method and way Canvas contacts you with reminders of course deadlines and activity. These can be updated/changed at any time.

  • We will be using an online monitoring program for exam proctoring.  You must have a valid photo ID, computer, webcam, chrome browser, and microphone.  Tablets and phones may not be used with an online monitoring program.  You may take the exam in person at TLC or another approved proctoring location.  Please contact me several weeks before the exam if you wish to take the exam in person. 
  • You must have a reliable computer with reliable, consistent Internet access
  • You must have an up-to-date internet browser, Chrome is preferred for Canvas.
  • Access to a word processing program (such as Microsoft Word) and slideshow presentation program (such as Microsoft PowerPoint), you may use Google Docs and Google Slides instead.
  • Valid MyCanyons email account that you will regularly check
  • Basic document creation and handling (how to cut/copy/paste from one document to another.
  • Be able to create and save documents in Microsoft Word and as a pdf file, how to attach documents to email messages and discussion posts, how to create and save a graph/chart/diagram, etc. in Microsoft Excel or Microsoft PowerPoint.

Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.
