Introduction

Hi everyone!  I will have the pleasure of teaching you some statistics while having fun in class.

I am teaching Math for over 30 years now, and I found that the students learn learn the most when the class is fun.

I am not saying that the class is piece of cake, but I can promise it will be interesting and enjoyable. 

I love shortcuts and extra credits. Most importantly, will teach you how to apply your knowledge in your everyday life.

Course Description

We will learn how to collect, organize and validate the data through the mathematical manipulations.

Student Learning Outcome: At the end of the course, students should be able to
i. Apply basic statistical procedures, including the collection, analysis, and reporting of data designed to test a research hypothesis.
ii. Demonstrate the appropriate use of computer-based statistical software.

What to Expect in this Course

Usually, the first week in for introductions and registrations, learning how to navigate the course. Then we will cover a chapter a week, which is about two sections per class. Most of the work, including the HW, will be done in class. You will finish the rest of the HW at you own pace. 

Course Requirements:

  • You must attend the class meetings via Zoom.
  • Please make sure that you are staying on top of all assignments as there will be no makeup assignments for any reason. 
  • Every student is expected to make a time commitment for this course every week. A homework set is due weekly. 

Technology Requirement:

  • Be sure you have reliable Internet access as you will spend a lot of time in Canvas.
  • You may want to have a scientific calculator for some exercises and exams, even though your phone and PC may already have one.
  • Assignments will be submitted through Canvas on Pearson MyMathLab.
  • The computer must have speakers, webcam, and microphone.

Types of Assessments

We will have weekly chapter HW, quizzes and the comprehensive final exam. There are also discussion boards and class chats to ask questions and get help.

All the assignments are online.

Textbook Information

Introductory Statistics, Exploring the World Through Data (3rd edition or COC custom edition), by Robert Gould and Colleen Ryan.

You can buy the physical book and access code bundle from bookstore. You can also purchase the access code directly from Pearson. 

It comes with free eBook, all the class materials, and the technology needed for class (StatCrunch).

Canvas

This course can be accessed on the first day of class via Canvas at https://coc.instructure.com. Log into Canvas using your CanyonsID single sign-on:

  • CanyonsID Username is your COC student email address (Ex: username@my.canyons.edu)

The Counseling Department offers appointments online. You can schedule an appointment by visiting the Online Counseling website. Counselors can help you map out a plan to reach your educational goals as well as advise you on course selection and registration.

Management of Stress and Mental Health

Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. You can learn more about the broad range of confidential student services, including counseling and mental health services available on campus by visiting the Student Health & Wellness Center in the Student Services Building (across from the bookstore). At the Canyon Country Campus the Health Center will be in the new Student Services Building.

Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.

You can also now use the Crisis Text Line: Just text "Courage" to 741741. Someone will get back to you immediately. Its free, 24/7, and confidential.

Veterans Resource Center

The College of the Canyons Veterans Resource Center is a department within the Student Services Division at the college, created to help veterans and veteran dependents with applying to College of the Canyons, enrolling in classes, and requesting VA Education or Vocational Benefits.
