My name is Kevin Larsen, and I want to welcome you to the world opportunities that being able to read and interpret machine drawings for traditional and advanced machining can provide in today’s industries. I am a well-seasoned professional in design, engineering, prototyping, machining, fabrication and process control. With all my years in the industry, I can’t wait to share in my experiences as a way to offer insight to the many possible career paths that can all be more enriched by knowing what it takes to speak the language of the manufacturing professional: From the technician on the shop floor to the manufacturing engineer and everything in between

Course Description

 

Blue printsIntroduces the student to the proper way of navigating around a production print. This course will describe, demonstrate, define and interpret the body of a print. Showing the different features and layouts found on a production drawing. It will also describe and demonstrate the proper ways of relaying information through isometric images and text on the documents.

What to Expect in this Course

Some of the activities you can expect to engage in during a semester in your class. Diving into the structure of machine drawings. Discerning different symbols, text and dimensions found on drawings. Understanding print layouts and how to determine what information is being conveyed.  We will have one exam final. You are expected to attend this course 4 times a week online via Zoom, and submit assignments or participate in discussions. I will have specific subjects that we will cover for each session and the homework and quizzes will be tailored to each of these. It’s extremely important that you keep up with all your work assignments, attend all class meetings, and communicate often.

  • Attend all sessions. We will maximize the opportunity for hands-on learning that can be accomplished during our class time together.
  • Participate and collaborate with others often, including outside of class time, so that you may learn from each other. 
  • Ask questions, and do not be afraid to be wrong about something.
  • Plan time each day to complete work and study for this class (you need to make a schedule).

Types of Assessments

Assigned reading of sections will be given during the sessions. Taking of quizzes at the completion of each session groups. will be required weekly and will be part of your final grade. Your homework and reading will be roughly 4 hours a week. Each week the homework and or quizzes will be graded and recorded to track each students progress and involvement or participation. All examination, homework, and in class assignments will be graded on a point system as described in the syllabus. There will be a comprehensive final exam. The total possible points will be weighted as follows:

  • Homework 30%
  • Quizzes 15%
  • Assigned projects 20%
  • Final Exam 20%
  • Class participation 15%

Other Relevant Course Information

All students need to attend the first session of the course or they can be dropped for the term. Students on the waiting list will be contacted if a position opens in the course at least one week prior to the beginning of the class. The acceptable times to drop the course is listed in the syllabus along with additional important course information.

Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. You can learn more about the broad range of confidential student services, including counseling and mental health services available on campus by visiting the Student Health & Wellness Center in the Student Services Building (across from the bookstore). At the Canyon Country Campus the Health Center will be in the new Student Services Building.

Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.

You can also now use the Crisis Text Line: Just text "Courage" to 741741. Someone will get back to you immediately. Its free, 24/7, and confidential.

Veterans Resource Center

The College of the Canyons Veterans Resource Center is a department within the Student Services Division at the college, created to help veterans and veteran dependents with applying to College of the Canyons, enrolling in classes, and requesting VA Education or Vocational Benefits.
