Hello, I am Professor Larsen. I have been in the manufacturing industry for over 38 years. My work experience consists of Aero space, Additive manufacturing, Mechanical design, Process Manufacturing engineer, Manufacturing, and Special Effects. As a process engineer, if worked closely with production and engineering to determine the viability of different metals and alloys in the production arena. Working with, designing and fabricating hundreds of parts and assemblies has given me the understanding of the proper use of metals. This will enable me to share this knowledge to students that are interested in learning these skills.

Course Description

Surveys common metals and metal alloys used in today’s manufacturing industries. Covers physical and mechanical properties of ferrous and nonferrous metals for individuals working in the machine trades. Explores the basics of metal manufacturing, includes how metals and alloys are produced, and examines common testing methods used to measure and evaluate metal properties.

What to Expect in this Course

Your homework and reading will be roughly 2/4 hours a week. We will follow an online course content from Amatrol (A third party content provider). Each week you will be required to go through the content and complete any self-skills and quizzes. It is recommended that you have full access to a computer or laptop. It will be more difficult to access content from a phone or tablet. On the device that you are using it is required to have a web cam of some sort with microphone or stand alone. A final exam will be given at the end of the course, there will be weekly quizzes on content and multiple informational videos available to help explain the course content in a visual manor. 

Types of Assessments

Assigned reading of sections will be given during the sessions. Taking of quizzes at the completion of each session groups. will be required weekly and will be part of your final grade. Each week the homework and or quizzes will be graded and recorded to track each students progress and involvement or participation. All examination, homework, and in class assignments will be graded on a point system as described in the syllabus. There will be a comprehensive final exam given on-line. The total possible points will be weighted as follows: (point values may change do to content).

  • Homework 25%
  • Quizzes 20%
  • Assigned projects 10%
  • Final Exam 30%
  • Class participation 15%

Other Relevant Course Information

All students need to attend the first session of the course or they can be dropped for the term. Students on the waiting list will be contacted if a position opens in the course at least one week prior to the beginning of the class. The acceptable times to drop the course is listed in the syllabus along with additional important course information.

Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.

Veterans Resource Center
