Introduction

Hello and welcome to the MLT 120 course, Clinical Chemistry I Lecture!  This is the first part of a 2-part Clinical Chemistry lecture courses in the MLT Program.  The clinical chemistry course is a combination focuses on analytical techniques used in the clinical chemistry department and the disorders detected as a result of diagnostic testing.

My name is Dr. Hency Chu and I am a Clinical Laboratory Scientist.

Course Description

The first course in Clinical Chemistry will include the basic and automated equipment use in the department, pipetting techniques, dilutions, safety protocols, regulatory agencies that oversee the overall operations in a diagnostic laboratory, HIPAA, and other introductory topics in clinical chemistry.

What to Expect in this Course

Lectures will be held twice a week and online attendance is mandatory.  The MLT program is approved by the California Department of Public Health/ Laboratory Field Services and requires documentation that students attended the required number of hours of lecture and lab.  The class is 3 units and requires at least 9 hours of extra time, outside of lecture, to read and review concepts discussed in lecture.

You are required to have a computer, a webcam, microphone, internet access, and access to Canvas where your instructor will post all of the course materials, including assigned homework.

Types of Assessments

Proctored online quizzes, online discussion boards, and written assignments

Other Relevant Course Information

It is important that students keep a consistent study schedule and join study groups, as it is nearly impossible to go through this course alone.  Typically, students who succeed in the MLT program and courses seek out study groups and build supportive connections with their classmates. I will do my best to help establish these learning communities at the start of the semester.
