Introduction

Hello and Welcome to the course! I am very excited that you are taking this course to sharpen your professional skills and I am thrilled to share in your personal and professional development journey.  

This is a 16-hour course offered over a four week period.  Be sure to post to the first discussion by the deadline in order to stay enrolled in the course.

Course Description

Explores relevant employment laws affecting the workplace in connection with the supervisor's role in ensuring compliance.

What to Expect in this Course

We strongly encourage you to strive toward passing the Human Resources Academy courses. If you earn a passing grade in all courses associated with a certificate you can earn a certificate of completion! This will increase your value to future employers, give you something to show for all your hard work, and strengthen your resume and/or LinkedIn profile! More detailed information can be found on Canvas. In order to receive a Pass for attending this course, participants are encouraged to:

  • Watch all videos
  • Fully participate in discussion boards
  • Complete final assignment
  • Earn at least 80% of the total points.

Types of Assessments

This class is offered as noncredit. All noncredit courses are graded as Pass (P) or No Pass (NP). Grade Breakdown:
Pass (P) = 80 - 100%
No Pass (NP) = Less than 80%

Supervisor's Roadmap Certificate

Provides supervisors, managers, and business leaders with an in-depth employment law review and the strategies and tools to more effectively hire, manage, motivate and retain talent.  Designed for those interested in moving into a supervisor role or into a leadership role with additional employment oversight responsibilities.  To earn this certificate, you must complete the following two courses.

  • NC.BUS2A SUPERVISOR’S ROLE IN WORKPLACE COMPLIANCE (16 hours)

Identifies and connects relevant employment laws affecting the workplace to the supervisor's role in ensuring compliance, including laws pertaining to EEO, prevention of discrimination and harassment, wage and hour, employee health and safety, and benefits and leaves of absences.

  • NC.BUS2B PEOPLE MANAGEMENT (24 hours)

Examines the employment life cycle from a supervisor and business leader's perspective. Prepares supervisors to more effectively hire, manage, motivate, and retain talent. Focuses on recruitment and selection, onboarding, performance and employee conflict management, and compliance and safety.

Academic Accommodation Center (AAC)

Online Counseling

The Counseling Department offers appointments online. You can schedule an appointment by visiting the Online Counseling website. Counselors can help you map out a plan to reach your educational goals as well as advise you on course selection and registration.

Management of Stress and Mental Health

Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. You can learn more about the broad range of confidential student services, including counseling and mental health services available on campus by visiting the Student Health & Wellness Center in the Student Services Building (across from the bookstore). The phone number is 661-362-3259 that you can call 24/7. You can also e mail for an appointment at StudentHealthCenter@canyons.edu. At the Canyon Country Campus the Health Center will be in the new Student Services Building.

Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.

You can also now use the Crisis Text Line: Just text "Courage" to 741741. Someone will get back to you immediately. Its free, 24/7, and confidential.

Veterans Resource Center

The College of the Canyons Veterans Resource Center is a department within the Student Services Division at the college, created to help veterans and veteran dependents with applying to College of the Canyons, enrolling in classes, and requesting VA Education or Vocational Benefits.
