Introduction
Welcome to NC.CGSL-001: Resources/Strategies College Success Course!
This course will provide you with the skills necessary to be a successful in college. The goal of this course is to prepare you for the transition from high school to college and or to assist you in planning your first year of college at COC. You will learn about COC resources, professor expectation and learn how to prepare for winter & spring registration.
Course Description
After completing this course, you should be able to:
- Identify Student Services resources on campus.
- Evaluate Associate Degree and Certificate options.
- Employ time-management strategies
- Demonstrate personal and academic goal setting.
What to Expect in this Course
Please keep in mind that this is a 1-week course. You will be expected to log onto the canvas site every day. I will be posting announcements, assignments, discussion items, and homework activities that you will be expected to participate in during the week.
All course work will be completed online using Canvas. You will be able to access the Canvas course beginning the first day of the course.

In order to take this class, you must have access to a computer, internet services and e-mail. All communications are done through e-mail, Announcements & the Discussion Board
We will be using Open Educational Resources (OER) materials for this course! There is no cost to you as a student – all the materials necessary for this course are FREE to you and will be available through Canvas in an online format.
This course utilizes a LMS called Canvas. Please log into Canvas by visiting https://coc.instructure.com so that you won’t get dropped from the class. Login information will be emailed to you prior to the start of the course. If you would like to review how to use Canvas, please visit the guides.

ZOOM Counseling Meetings: Optional
I will be offering 30 minute zoom sessions to provide students with an overview of MAP and what you need to know to create your schedule for Winter & Spring 2020. The Zoom link & meeting times will be provided in your Canvas course located in Monday’s Module.

This course can be accessed on the first day of class via Canvas at https://coc.instructure.com. Log into Canvas using your CanyonsID single sign-on:

Academic Accommodation Center (AAC)
College of the Canyons AAC provides educational services and access for eligible students with documented disabilities who intend to pursue coursework at COC. Online Counseling
The Counseling Department offers appointments online. You can schedule an appointment by visiting the Online Counseling website. Counselors can help you map out a plan to reach your educational goals as well as advise you on course selection and registration.
Management of Stress and Mental Health
Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. You can learn more about the broad range of confidential student services, including counseling and mental health services available on campus by visiting the Student Health & Wellness Center in the Student Services Building (across from the bookstore). The phone number is 661-362-3259 that you can call 24/7. You can also e mail for an appointment at StudentHealthCenter@canyons.edu. At the Canyon Country Campus the Health Center will be in the new Student Services Building.
Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.
You can also now use the Crisis Text Line: Just text "Courage" to 741741. Someone will get back to you immediately. Its free, 24/7, and confidential.
Veterans Resource Center
The College of the Canyons Veterans Resource Center is a department within the Student Services Division at the college, created to help veterans and veteran dependents with applying to College of the Canyons, enrolling in classes, and requesting VA Education or Vocational Benefits.
