Hello everyone, and welcome to Noncredit ESL 060- College Reading, Writing, and Grammar! My name is Katie Simpson, and I will be your instructor for this course. I'm looking forward to meeting you all and having a fun semester practicing our English online together!

Course Description

This course develops reading, writing, and grammar skills designed to progress non-native speakers of English toward college-level work. We will enhance our reading, writing, and grammar skills by targeting relevant, everyday and college topics and life skills competencies while engaging in collaborative and active learning strategies. You will have the opportunity to work together with your classmates and of course, improve your English!

What to Expect in this Course

This is an Online Live course, so we will not meet on campus for any reason. However, we will meet synchronously on Zoom during our class hours. We will be using Canvas as our Learning Management System in this course. All of your materials, assignments, homework, quizzes, and tests will be on our class website on Canvas. Don't worry if this is your first time using Canvas! I will help you access and navigate your class website, and I will tell you everything you need to know. We are all in this together!

You will be expected to log in to Canvas regularly to view announcements, participate in activities, and submit assignments, quizzes, and tests. The majority of your assignments and homework will be written and video discussion posts, assignment submissions, and quizzes or tests. We will read texts, short stories, or articles, answer reading comprehension questions, and complete follow-up activities. We will also practice writing paragraphs, emails, and blog posts. Throughout the course, there will be extensive grammatical practice of verb tenses and other level appropriate grammar. During our synchronous meetings, you will engage in pair or small group activities, tasks, and games, and you will complete a Unit Project at the end of each unit.

Types of Assessments

There will be an End of Level Test at the end of this course on which you will receive a Pass or No Pass grade.
