Introduction
Hello and Welcome to the course! I am very excited that you are taking this course to sharpen your professional skills and I am thrilled to share in your personal and professional development journey.
This is a 16-hour course offered over a two week period. Be sure to post to the first discussion by the deadline in order to stay enrolled in the course.
Course Description
Explores the major areas of responsibilities under human resources and the importance of these functions within a business. Discover careers within human resources and the skills needed to be successful.
What to Expect in this Course
We strongly encourage you to strive toward passing the Human Resources Academy courses. If you earn a passing grade in all courses associated with a certificate you can earn a certificate of completion! This will increase your value to future employers, give you something to show for all your hard work, and strengthen your resume and/or LinkedIn profile! More detailed information can be found on Canvas. In order to receive a Pass for attending this course, participants are encouraged to:
- Watch all videos
- Fully participate in discussion boards
- Complete final assignment
- Earn at least 80% of the total points.
Types of Assessments
This class is offered as noncredit. All noncredit courses are graded as Pass (P) or No Pass (NP). Grade Breakdown: • Pass (P) = 80 - 100% • No Pass (NP) = Less than 80%

Gateway Human Resources Assistant Certificate
Prepares participants with a solid foundation of the human resources functions, basic knowledge of relevant employment laws, and the ability to perform basic human resources activities essential to the employment life cycle. Designed to provide knowledge and skills for employment into an entry-level position in human resources. To earn this certificate, you must complete the following three courses.
- NC.BUS1A FOUNDATIONS OF HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT (16 hours)
Introduces the major areas of responsibilities under human resources and the importance of these functions within a business.
- NC.BUS1B EMPLOYMENT LAW FUNDAMENTALS (16 hours)
Introduces relevant state and federal employment laws that impact the workplace, as well as legal implications and costs of non-compliance with employment laws.
- NC.BUS1C HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT SUPPORT ACTIVITIES (16 hours)
Prepares participants to perform foundational activities in the areas of compliance and safety, recruitment, onboarding, human resources data, and activities occurring in the course of employment.

Academic Accommodation Center (AAC)

Online Counseling
The Counseling Department offers appointments online. You can schedule an appointment by visiting the Online Counseling website. Counselors can help you map out a plan to reach your educational goals as well as advise you on course selection and registration.
Management of Stress and Mental Health
Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. You can learn more about the broad range of confidential student services, including counseling and mental health services available on campus by visiting the Student Health & Wellness Center in the Student Services Building (across from the bookstore). The phone number is 661-362-3259 that you can call 24/7. You can also e mail for an appointment at StudentHealthCenter@canyons.edu. At the Canyon Country Campus the Health Center will be in the new Student Services Building.
Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.
You can also now use the Crisis Text Line: Just text "Courage" to 741741. Someone will get back to you immediately. Its free, 24/7, and confidential.
Veterans Resource Center
The College of the Canyons Veterans Resource Center is a department within the Student Services Division at the college, created to help veterans and veteran dependents with applying to College of the Canyons, enrolling in classes, and requesting VA Education or Vocational Benefits.
