My name is Garrett Hooper and I'm excited to be a part of your learning experience as you begin your academic career at College of the Canyons. This is a great course to connect with a counselor, network with other new students, and learn some valuable tools to successfully navigate the college experience.  I look forward to working with you and I'll see you online!

Course Description

This course will introduce you to the skills necessary to succeed in credit courses.  Topics that will be cover are academic expectations, financial aid options, academic and career educational options, College of the Canyons resources, and goal setting.

What to Expect in this Course

This is a 100% Online ONE Week Course.

This Non-Credit course will have each student focus on the following topics:

1.      Identify Student Services Resources on campus.

2.      Understand the difference in academic expectations between the noncredit and credit programs.

3.      Evaluate Associate Degree and Certificate programs.

4.      Employ time-management strategies.

5.      Demonstrate personal and academic goal setting.

Types of Assessments

Discussion boards, self-reflection, and other assigned activities.

We will be using Zero Text Cost Resources (ZTC) materials for this course! There is no cost to you as a student – all the materials necessary for this course are FREE to you and will be available through Canvas in an online format.

Other Relevant Course Information

Each student will be expected to keep up with the module content, activities, and reading on their own.  You will be expected to log onto the Canvas site every day. I will be posting announcements, assignments, discussion items, and homework activities that you will be expected to participate in during the week.

In order to take this class, you must have access to a computer, internet services and e-mail. All communications are done through e-mail, zoom rooms or the discussion board. This course utilizes a learning management system (LMS) called Canvas.

The Counseling Department offers appointments online. You can schedule an appointment by visiting the Online Counseling website. Counselors can help you map out a plan to reach your educational goals as well as advise you on course selection and registration.

Veterans Resource Center

The College of the Canyons Veterans Resource Center is a department within the Student Services Division at the college, created to help veterans and veteran dependents with applying to College of the Canyons, enrolling in classes, and requesting VA Education or Vocational Benefits.
