Introduction

Professor Ally Loprete headshot

Hello! You can call me Professor Ally, as most of my students do. ?

Although I’ve been a college professor for just a few years, teaching has already proven to be the most rewarding and fulfilling job I’ve ever had. I’m deeply passionate about it, and I have every intention of making this my long-term career!

Before stepping into the world of academia, I had the privilege of exploring a wide range of careers. I’ve worked as a radio show host, a published author, a motivational speaker, and even a television talk show host. I’ve also had the chance to perform as a stage actress and a vocalist, and I’ve held leadership roles in the entertainment industry as an executive. Additionally, I’ve been a business consultant and a multi-business owner, which has given me a diverse set of experiences to draw from in my teaching.

Each of these experiences has shaped my approach to education, and I bring a unique perspective to the classroom, hoping to inspire my students to pursue their passions and think beyond the traditional paths.

I’m excited to be part of your learning journey and look forward to getting to know each of you!

In addition, you will learn how to:

  • Differentiate content, emotions, perceptions and intentions in a communication exchange.
  • Build an advanced communication toolkit to forward your career.
  • Illustrate clear and congruent verbal and nonverbal messages tailored to the personalities involved, the desired outcomes, and the context.

What to Expect in this Course

You will receive class announcements through CANVAS, as well as have the ability to communicate with me and schedule time with me.  I will make the course link live a week before the first class meeting so you will be able to familiarize yourself with the system. Each new module will be made visible on Sundays at 11:59pm. It is recommend that you review each module overview at the beginning of each week to prepare for our time together in class which will include class activities and discussions.

If you are absent and miss an in-class activity, you will not be able to make up those participation points. It is your responsibility to find out what you missed, however, by getting lecture notes from a peer. Please do not ask the instructor how you can make up missed classes.

The COC Non-credit department does not offer scheduled "office hours" however, if you need to speak with me in a more private setting. I will be available in between classes and during scheduled breaks.

Other Relevant Course Information

This is a university level course. This means that there will be higher expectations than you might be used to as a high school student. However, a passing grade will not be difficult as long as it is clear that you are actively putting in your best effort. I will always be rooting for you and I will provide a warm and safe environment for you to sharpen your analytical skills. Making mistakes is the best way to grow, so I want you to feel comfortable enough to take risks and ask questions.  Even though I don't have set office hours, I always make myself available to my students if you find that you need some extra support.
