Introduction

Hello! My name is Lynn Suh and I will be your instructor for NC.CSKL-020: Self-Awareness. You can call me Professor Suh, Professor Lynn, or Mrs. Suh - whatever you feel comfortable with as long as it's respectful.

I look forward to engaging in discussions with you so that you are better prepared for your workplace. My greatest hope for you in this class is that you learn more about yourself and others through reflection, assessments, and discussions. 

Course Description

Explores the link between personality and one’s preferred work environment. Build self-awareness by interpreting and applying personality test results to educational, personal, and career goals. 

Course Objectives: 

  1. Evaluate personality types to promote self-awareness in the context of social awareness. 

  1. Assess personality characteristics to build self-awareness and address weaknesses. 

  1. Identify differences in communication, decision-making, and leadership styles based on personality type. 

  1. Utilize a reflective approach to understand areas of social and self-awareness that need improvement.

What to Expect in this Course

I believe that we all have room to grow and can learn from one another and hope you actively participate in class. There will be small and large group discussions, assessments, reflections, and activities.

Since this is a hybrid course, class materials, resources, and assignments will be posted on Canvas. ALL deadlines can be found on Canvas.

Types of Assessments

Career Skills classes are graded as Pass (P) & No Pass (NP). 

Course Responsibilities Determining Grade: 

Point Distribution: 

  • Weekly Canvas Reflection: You will complete a reflection on Canvas at the end of every class (7 sessions total, 5 points each). Please note that if you are absent, tardy, or leave early, you are responsible for submitting the weekly reflection by the deadline. The PowerPoint slides will be made available on Canvas so that you know what was covered during each class. I do not accept late submissions.  

35 points 

  • Final Reflection Paper: Your final reflection paper is DUE on MARCH 21, 2025 before class starts. Details and rubric for this assignment will be provided on 3/14/2025.  

15 points 

TOTAL POINTS THIS SEMESTER: 

50 POINTS 

Grade Breakdown: 

Pass (P) = 35 – 50 points 

No Pass (NP) = Less than 35 points

This course can be accessed on the first day of class via Canvas at https://coc.instructure.com. Log into Canvas using your CanyonsID single sign-on:

Online Counseling

The Counseling Department offers appointments online. You can schedule an appointment by visiting the Online Counseling website. Counselors can help you map out a plan to reach your educational goals as well as advise you on course selection and registration.

Management of Stress and Mental Health

Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. You can learn more about the broad range of confidential student services, including counseling and mental health services available on campus by visiting the Student Health & Wellness Center in the Student Services Building (across from the bookstore). The phone number is 661-362-3259 that you can call 24/7. You can also e mail for an appointment at StudentHealthCenter@canyons.edu. At the Canyon Country Campus the Health Center will be in the new Student Services Building.

Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.

You can also now use the Crisis Text Line: Just text "Courage" to 741741. Someone will get back to you immediately. Its free, 24/7, and confidential.

Veterans Resource Center

The College of the Canyons Veterans Resource Center is a department within the Student Services Division at the college, created to help veterans and veteran dependents with applying to College of the Canyons, enrolling in classes, and requesting VA Education or Vocational Benefits.
