NC ESL 2A - NC ESL Beginner High A - Cynthia Martinsson
|Course:||NC ESL Beginner High A|
Greetings and a warm welcome to NC ESL 2A – High Beginner! Our Zoom classroom is a friendly and welcoming place where you will improve your English skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Our classroom community is one that supports and encourages each other. You can feel comfortable and relaxed here as you study and practice English.
My name is Cynthia Martinsson, and I am happy to be your teacher for this course. I have been teaching ESL since 2011. Teaching English language learners like YOU is my dream job! I love helping students from all over the world to become confident and proficient English speakers and to experience American life to its fullest. When I’m not teaching, I love traveling and exploring new places, especially by bicycle. I’m looking forward to getting to know all of you.
This course develops English skills at the beginning high level through listening, speaking, reading, and writing, including grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, and everyday life situations. You will often work with a partner or small group on conversation practice, grammar exercises, activities, or projects. In addition to using the student book, you will receive extra learning material for free on our Canvas page. We’ll work with videos, music, and other audio resources, too, so that you have a variety of learning opportunities.
What to Expect in this Course
Our class meetings take place via Zoom. It's important that you attend these meetings regularly and do your best to arrive on time. Please see the class schedule for meeting dates and times.
You will need a computer with a microphone and a stable internet connection. A webcam is also useful. It's possible to use a tablet or cell phone, but a desktop computer or laptop is easier. Additionally, we use Canvas for class handouts, homework assignments, quizzes, and more. You can access Canvas from the COC homepage, and you can access Zoom from Canvas. However, I will also send you the Zoom link after you are registered for the course.
Homework is assigned at every class meeting, and you can expect to spend about 15 minutes on each assignment.
It's vital that you check your COC email account regularly for messages from me. I will also post important information in Canvas Announcements. Occasionally, I may send messages through the Remind app. The course will be open on Canvas on the day before classes begin so that you can take a look around.
I will send an email to all registered students a week before classes begin. At that time, I'll provide the links to Zoom and Canvas, and other important information.
Types of Assessments
We will have regular quizzes in Canvas so you can see your progress. Additionally, you will take an End of Level Test at the end of the course. This will cover all four skills - listening, speaking, reading, and writing. You must score 70% or better to receive a PASS score for this course.
