Introduction
Welcome to NC ESL 4A! Our on-campus classroom is a friendly and supportive place where you will advance your English skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
My name is Jessica Edmond, and I am looking forward to getting to know you and helping you along your language-learning journey. I have been teaching ESL at College of the Canyons since 2018. I love everything about the study of language and sharing this passion with others. One of my favorite things about my job is learning about your culture and sharing mine with you.
Course Description
Develops English skills at the Intermediate High level through listening, speaking, reading and writing, including grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary and everyday life situations. Offered Pass/No Pass only.
What to Expect in this Course
Our lessons will be based on content from an engaging textbook, called Stand Out 4. The topics covered focus on real-world themes to help you develop and hone life skills for career and college success. In this eight-week course, we will complete the first half of the textbook and finish the second half in NC ESL 4B. You will complete homework in your Stand Out 4 Workbook, as well as make presentations and complete other supplemental assignments. You will frequently work collaboratively with your classmates and should be willing to communicate with them outside of class as needed for assignments.
We will use technology in this course, but do not worry if you do not have strong computer skills. All you need is a willingness to try new things and patience. I will provide you with the support you need. Please be sure you have access to a computer/tablet and the internet. We will use Canvas (our course website) to store and access additional course materials, submit assignments, view grades, take quizzes, and more. We may occasionally meet on Zoom, which will require using a computer or smartphone that has a microphone and camera.
Good communication is very important for college success. Please make sure you know how to access your COC email and check it regularly throughout the course. I will send announcements through Canvas that will be delivered to your email. For brief messages, we will use Remind, a free text-messaging app. You can send and receive Remind messages on your smartphone or through email.
Types of Assessments
Your progress will be assessed through quizzes, writing, presentations and role-play, and your own self-assessment. Quizzes may be given in Canvas or in class. An end-of-level test will be given in Week 8 to determine that you have met the objectives of this course in all four skills - listening, speaking, reading, and writing. You must score 70% or better to receive a PASS score for this course.
Textbook Information
For levels 4A and 4B, we will use Stand Out 4, 3rd edition with the accompanying workbook. These books can be purchased from the College of the Canyons Bookstore. If you find a better price somewhere else, let the COC bookstore know. They may be able to “price match,” give you the same price as the other vendor.
