Introduction

I have been teaching full-time at CoC since 1999.

Our noncredit math classes are similar to chapters from a book so that you may pick topics that you need.

  • Free
  • Pass/No Pass
  • No Transcript Notation
  • Earn 70% of all assignment points to earn a pass.

Course Description

  1. Circles, includes distance and midpoint.
  2. Ellipses
  3. Hyperbolas
  4. Parabolas

What to Expect in this Course

This particular noncredit math class takes about 6-10 hours to complete.  This course is self-paced, but you must complete one assignment by deadline to stay enrolled.  (See date listed in syllabus which will be posted in Canvas.)  There are also links to videos in the modules in Canvas.

Types of Assessments

All assignment questions are online multiple-choice questions.  These are similar to homework questions from a book.  You have several attempts at each assignment to improve your score.

Textbook Information

There are links to a free open resource book within the modules in Canvas.  To supplement the book, there are links to videos in the modules in Canvas.

Other Relevant Course Information

Complete one assignment by the deadline listed to stay enrolled.

Email instructor if you need help using the tools within the online homework platform for drawing the conic sections.

Take 10 hours and divide by the number of days left (or weeks) to determine how many hours per day or week you need to set aside to work on this course material.

If you enroll in several noncredit math classes at once, consider finishing one per week and then working on the next one.  You may want to sign up for 2 classes, finish them, and then sign up for 2 more before the last day to sign up.  How many you sign up for depends upon whether the noncredit classes are being offered over 5-weeks, 8-weeks, or 14-weeks, for example.

If I set up deadlines in Canvas for this class, they are generally recommendations to help with pacing.  The two important dates are the one to finish one assignment so that you are not dropped, and the last date for which you need to finish 70% of all assignment points on the day the class closes.
