Introduction
Hello & Welcome to Yoga Techniques I (Theory & Practice). This is the second component of the COC Yoga Teacher Training Program.
This is a hybrid course, which means that we will combine the learning formats of online and on-campus classes. In a hybrid class, you can expect to have some on-campus meetings, as well as complete coursework independently online.
Course Description
NC Yoga-002 Yoga Techniques I (Theory & Practice) 50.00 – 60.00 hours Explores the theory and practice of beginning-level yoga postures, safety techniques, the study of anatomy and muscles used in performing beginning postures, and the study and practice (pranayamas) of breathing and meditation techniques. This course is the second component of the 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training Certificate program through the Yoga Alliance.
In this course, we will:
1. Outline the history of yoga asana.
2. Identify English and Sanskrit names of yoga poses.
3. Identify and verbally cue asanas and pranayamas using English and Sanskrit names with correct pronunciation.
4. Demonstrate physical alignment and anatomical focus for beginning level yoga poses.
5. Explain safety techniques involved in performing basic yoga poses, including the use of props.
6. Describe the energetic focus for asanas, pranayama, meditation and mantra practice studied.
7. Explain benefits and contraindications of beginning-level asanas, pranayamas and meditation techniques.
8. Categorize and practice beginning-level yoga asanas using correct technique.
What to Expect in this Course
Course work load includes approximately 6-8 hours per week.
Access and working knowledge of Canvas is necessary for the online portion, a personal yoga mat, two yoga blocks, a yoga strap, and yoga clothing are necessary for in-person classes.

- Weekly participation and engagement in class discussions and practice sessions (20%)
- Format: In-person and online via Canvas
- Quizzes on yoga foundations, anatomy, and pranayama (30%)
- Format: In-person and online via Canvas
- Final written reflection on personal learning and growth through yoga practice (20%)
- Format: Online via Canvas
- Final practicum session demonstrating learned postures with proper alignment (30%)

Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. You can learn more about the broad range of confidential student services, including counseling and mental health services available on campus by visiting the Student Health & Wellness Center in the Student Services Building (across from the bookstore). At the Canyon Country Campus the Health Center will be in the new Student Services Building.
Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.
You can also now use the Crisis Text Line: Just text "Courage" to 741741. Someone will get back to you immediately. Its free, 24/7, and confidential.
