Introduction
Welcome to Mass Media & Society!
In this course, we’ll dive into the world of mass media—exploring how it shapes the way we think, live, and connect with each other. From social media and news sites to TV shows, films, music, ads, and more, we’ll take a close look at how different forms of media impact our society. You’ll get to read, watch, research, and discuss a wide range of topics with your classmates as we break down real-world examples and current events. Be ready to explore online sources, engage in thought-provoking conversations, and bring your own insights to the table. This is a course that’s as much about asking questions as it is about finding answers—so your voice matters here!
Course Description
In this course, we’ll explore how mass media works, how it’s changed over time, and how it continues to shape our world. You’ll learn about the basics of communication, the history and economics behind media industries, and how digital trends are transforming audiences. We’ll dive into the role of media in politics, culture, and society—both in the U.S. and globally—and look at how different news outlets cover the same events. You’ll also examine media regulation, legal responsibilities, and consumer rights, while considering the impact of globalization and corporate influence on what we see and hear. By the end, you’ll be able to critically analyze media’s role in society and how it shapes the messages we receive.
