Introduction
Welcome to STAT C1000 Introduction to Statistics - 100% ONLINE class. My name is Anupama Chandran, and I will be your instructor for this course. Please feel free to email me if you have questions or need help with anything regarding the course. This orientation letter will provide you with helpful information as you prepare for your class.
The class does not meet on Zoom or in-person for regular lectures. During the semester, if you have any questions, you could join the zoom link provided on canvas for office hours or email me through canvas. You will be watching recorded lecture videos every week and take notes, discuss topics with your classmates, do problems from the textbook and submit them in Canvas Assignments.
Course Description
This course is an introduction to statistical thinking and processes, including methods and concepts for discovery and decision-making using data. Topics include descriptive statistics; probability and sampling distributions; statistical inference; correlation and linear regression; analysis of variance, chi-squared, and t-tests; and application of technology for statistical analysis including the interpretation of the relevance of the statistical findings. Students apply methods and processes to applications using data from a broad range of disciplines. The course also covers essential concepts and techniques for analyzing categorical data. Students will learn effective data visualization methods and statistical techniques. Topics include calculating and interpreting confidence intervals for one and two population proportions, checking necessary assumptions, and conducting hypothesis tests for both one and two populations. Additionally, the course addresses important considerations in hypothesis testing, such as Type I and Type II errors.
What to Expect in this Course
Typical Class Day:
The class is 100% ONLINE. There are no in-person or zoom lecture sessions. You will be working on the assigned materials every week, except for COC holidays. Every week, you will get statistics video lectures from me, and you need to watch the videos, complete quizzes embedded to the videos and then work on the practice problems at your own pace. Homework consists of finishing assigned problems from sections for the week, and work on project when available in canvas, and study for exams so that you can acquire a great score. Every week you will be working on one affective domain assignment as well.

I will provide weekly updates in Canvas at the beginning of the week. All exams will be administered online during designated dates and times.
Every student is expected to make serious time commitment for this course every week, including watching lecture videos and a lot more additional hours for learning the material and doing homework exercises. More time may be needed for exam preparation. A homework set is due at the end of each week.
Before each exam, you will go through review guides and review your homework. Then it will be easy to complete the chapter exams.
Types of Assessments
There will be few assignments like syllabus quiz, Introduce Yourself assignment etc. available on the first day of the semester in canvas. You must complete the assignments by the end of the first day (by 11:59 pm) and exact date is given in your syllabus. If you do not complete the first day assignments, you will be dropped from the course, unless I am notified in advance of a valid reason.
Exam & Quizzes Information
Exams will be completed online during scheduled dates and times. Quizzes will be done online in canvas which are embedded in the video lectures.
Textbook Information
The required free textbook for this STAT-C1000 course is "Introduction to Statistics for Community College Students (1st edition) by Matt Teachout. The chapters, video lectures, textbook problems etc. will be available in the "Modules" section in canvas.
