Introduction

Welcome to Chem 151! I am glad to have you in my class and excited to go through this journey of learning chemistry with you. To tell you a little bit about me, I have been at COC since 2019. Like all of you, I started my education at a community college, where I earned my transfer credits. I then transferred to CSUN and obtained my bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry. After CSUN, I transferred to USC and earned my PhD in Physical Chemistry. As part of the PhD program, I served as a teaching assistant for two years. It was during this time that I fell in love with teaching and decided to pursue a teaching career. After graduation, I worked as a teaching faculty at USC for a year and a half, and when the opportunity arose, I moved to teach at a community college where I found myself the most fulfilled.

Course Description

Welcome to Chemistry 151 – a 4.0-unit CSU, UC transferable course. This is a one semester preparatory course for CHEM 201 and provides intensive foundation in problem solving, basic atomic theory, stoichiometry, nomenclature, states of matter, and solution chemistry. Laboratory experiences will enforce principles learned and will familiarize students with proper handling and maintenance of gravimetric equipment. 4 units: UC, CSU transferable

What to Expect in this Course

This course is a hybrid 8-week course. Your lecture is 100% online and your lab will be on campus. You will participate in the course using COC’s course management system called CANVAS (https://coc.instructure.com/). If you have never used Canvas before, check out this Canvas Overview for Students before class starts. On Mon/Wed, you will meet with your lab instructor in-person for lab at the Canyon Country campus, CCLB 403.

The lecture is asynchronous, meaning you will need to allocate time during the week prior to the lab meetings for various tasks. This is a fast pace class. You will be scheduled to complete two chapters a week. There are multiple tasks that help you learn the material. These tasks include completing textbook readings, watching video lectures and take video quizzes, and participating in a group canvas discussion. At the conclusion of each week, you will be required to finish an online homework assignment and an online quiz. Furthermore, there will be three exams. All these exams will be conducted in-person.
