Introduction

I've been teaching since 2001. I've taught Woodshop, Engineering, Drafting and Machining. I was a Drafter, Industrial Designer, Design Engineer and Project Manager before I was a teacher. In this course you will learn how to use a lathe, milling machine and various other shop power and hand tools to make parts.

Course Description

Introduces the theory and application training in the use of machine tools such as the lathes, milling machines, drill presses, power saws, and bench grinders. Machine tool terminology, theory, math, part layout, and bench work using common and precision measuring tools is covered. Emphasis is placed on shop safety, housekeeping, and preventative maintenance of equipment.

What to Expect in this Course

This class meets twice a week for 6 hours for 8 weeks.

There will be reading and videos outside of class time.

You will need a relatively new (less than 3-years-old) computer to access Canvas and other course materials.

There will be tests/quizzes on the reading on a regular basis.

There will be several projects that students will make in the lab.

Types of Assessments

Types of assessments will be graded tests/quizzes and graded projects using a rubric.

Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.

Veterans Resource Center

The College of the Canyons Veterans Resource Center is a department within the Student Services Division at the college, created to help veterans and veteran dependents with applying to College of the Canyons, enrolling in classes, and requesting VA Education or Vocational Benefits.
