Introduction
My name is Noah Hamouche, and I will be your professor for this course. I have a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and a Master of Science in Civil-Transportation Engineering. I have been teaching at College of the Canyons in the Construction Management department since 2022. Currently, I am a Construction Project Manager at Brightline West. This will be my fifth year teaching this course at COC and I am very much looking forward to sharing my knowledge with you all. While this is only an intro course into construction contracts, you will learn quite a bit about contract formation, the elements of a strong contract, and what we do as construction managers to ensure that all aspects of a contract are followed in the construction phase.
Course Description
This course introduces the basics of construction contracts including typical contract terms and conditions, formation of contracts, administration, and contract interpretation; reviews the basic laws and regulations applying to construction including licensing laws for contractors and design professionals, mechanics liens, stop notices, labor regulations, OSHA/safety standards, SWPPP, and environmental issues.
What to Expect in this Course
This is a 16-week online course. There will be a lot of information given during each class and work that is due each week. The expectation is that each student should dedicate at least 4 hours of studying and review of all course material, outside of lecture, on a weekly basis. We will be going over multiple chapters per week, anywhere between 1 and 3 chapters. You will be expected to read the textbook chapters that we will be covering each week, review the learning materials on Canvas, and complete weekly assignments and quizzes for this course, which are due on Sundays.
Types of Assessments
The final exam will occur during the last week of class. All homework assignments, quizzes, and lecture slides/information will be organized in their respective “Modules” on Canvas. All quizzes and the final exam will be completely online via Canvas. Each quiz will be timed and only one attempt per question is allowed. The final exam will be uploaded 24 hours before the final exam date, to which you will have 24 hours to complete the final. The final submission for the final will be at 11:59PM on the last day of the course.
