Introduction

Welcome to CONST-124, The California Electrical Code! My name is Jean-Claude Olivier. I am your instructor for this course. I am currently a Senior Inspector with the City of Los Angeles assigned to the Code Enforcement Division. I obtained my Bachelor's and Master's Degrees from California State University, Northridge. I am also a Cal/OSHA Construction Authorized Outreach Trainer for 10 and 30 hour certifications. I am here to support you in your learning goals and needs. Course Description
This course introduces the California Electrical Code, including provisions of the Code, interpretation of construction documents, construction procedures, and inspection procedures.
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
1. Explain the purpose and the scope of the California Electric Code.
2. Calculate the electrical loads imposed on a system and identify the various conductors used.
3. Evaluate the various wiring methods and materials used and the requirements for each.
4. Analyze the basic standards, regulations, and requirements that apply to all general-use electrical equipment within the Electrical Code.
5. Assess the code requirements for air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.
6. Differentiate between general use and hazardous installation code requirements.
7. Interpret and identify the applicable sections of the Electrical Code that apply to special equipment installations.
8. Assess and identify special condition equipment and the applicable sections of the Electrical Code.
9. Evaluate the various communications systems regulated by the Electrical Code.
What to Expect in this Course
This is a 100% online course. In the online modality, all classwork is conducted online through Canvas. There will be no real-time/live meetings. Rather, you will participate with your classmates and instructor in your online (Canvas) through discussion boards and other assignments.
In this course, you will have different types of assignments that will be assessing/ensuring your retention of important course content and core concepts. The different types of assignments include, but are not limited t,o required readings, quizzes, exams, short answer/essay assignments, reflections, discussion board posts, and a focused assignment or essay.
Your estimated weekly workload will consist of required reading, a homework assignment, and discussion board post(s). A mid-term and final exam will be administered on the days/ time frame listed in the course schedule.
In addition to the required reading textbook content, supplemental material such as example permits, diagrams, photos/ videos of Electrical installations, and/or code violations will be presented. This material may be uploaded to Canvas for your reference and organized in weekly Modules to support learning activities. The modules may be released weekly (normally between the previous Friday and the current Monday of the module).
Use of a computer with an internet connection is required for this course.

Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few.
