AJ 185 - Police Community Relations - Robert Gasior

Introduction

Welcome!  I am a retired sergeant from the Los Angeles Police Department after serving over 29 years and have worked a variety of assignments from patrol, gangs, bikes and community relations.  I have also taught Arrest and Control Techniques (ground grappling) and Active Shooter Response to members of my department.  I have a Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice and a Masters Degree in Public Administration from California State University Northridge. 

I also spent 13 years in the US Marine Corps and served 2 combat tours in Iraq. I am originally from New Jersey and am an avid New York Mets and New York Giants fan.  

Course Description

Presents a study of the roles of the Administration of Justice agencies and their interaction with the community, including role expectations of the various agencies and the public at large. Emphasizes professionalism and the development of positive relationships between members of the system and the public.

What to Expect in this Course

The in-person version of this course typically requires at least one written assignment as well as several quizzes along with a mid-term exam and final exam.  

The online version requires students to post weekly in discussion forums, as well as the above listed assignments.

Both the online version and on ground version use the same textbook.

Management of Stress and Mental Health

Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. You can learn more about the broad range of confidential student services, including counseling and mental health services available on campus by visiting the Student Health & Wellness Center in the Student Services Building (across from the bookstore). At the Canyon Country Campus the Health Center will be in the new Student Services Building.

Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.

Veterans Resource Center

The College of the Canyons Veterans Resource Center is a department within the Student Services Division at the college, created to help veterans and veteran dependents with applying to College of the Canyons, enrolling in classes, and requesting VA Education or Vocational Benefits.
