Introduction

My name is Dr. Erica Seubert and I will be your instructor for the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning's (CETL) Reading Strategies course. I am so grateful that you have decided to explore Reading Apprenticeship strategies to incorporate into your teaching practice. The strategies that you will be learning about are designed to assist learners with skills that will help them to connect and engage with the material in your courses, on a path to true understanding.
Course Description
Explores current research about academic literacy and effective strategies to enhance critical reading in discipline-specific areas. The Reading Apprenticeship (RA) framework describes the components necessary to support reading development in content areas and create classroom environments that are more student-centered, collaborative, and metacognitive. This course is designed for students and faculty preparing for and maintaining a career in education. Emphasis is placed on developing the knowledge and skills necessary for success as an educator.
What to Expect in this Course
This course is fully asynchronous. Like many asynchronous courses, it is driven quite a bit by discussion posts. Asynchronous courses can insert more immediacy and interaction via the use of applications such as Padlet, Voicethread, Flipgrid, Perusall, Desmos, . . . and too many options to name. For ease of use, I will keep this course pretty simple, but I still aim to model how the Reading Apprenticeship framework can work in fully asynchronous spaces.
Expect to spend approximately three hours a week on this course. A good strategy might be to schedule regular times to focus on the course throughout each week. Week 1 may take a little extra time if you are not used to the Canvas platform and need to become acquainted with it.
Types of Assessments
An important element of this course is the "Making it Real" assignments, which give you the opportunity to try out an activity with students and report on that experience with a supportive community. (If you are taking this course at a time when you are not actively teaching, we ask that you plan an activity and receive feedback on your plan.) In today's complex world, we fully expect that you will wrestle with the affordances and limitations of both asynchronous and synchronous learning environments in deciding how to approach these assignments. You are in the driver's seat!
Textbook Information
All of the required readings for this course will be available through the Canvas course shell, at no additional cost.
Other Relevant Course Information
In order to earn a completion in this course, you need to complete at least 70% of the material in the course. I will be using a complete/incomplete grading system to help you keep track.
