Hello, my name is Yasmin Soltero, and I am an education professional with over a decade of experience supporting student success in higher education. My background includes academic advising, student services, recruitment, career development, and workforce planning, with a strong commitment to helping students achieve their educational and career goals.

Throughout my career, I have worked closely with diverse student populations, particularly those from historically underrepresented communities, providing guidance, resources, and support to help them navigate college and beyond. I am passionate about creating inclusive learning environments that empower students to build confidence, develop skills, and reach their full potential.

As an instructor, I strive to create engaging, student-centered learning experiences that encourage participation, collaboration, and practical application of course concepts. Introduction

Hello and welcome to NC 105: Introduction to Online Instruction!

I am excited to have you join this course. Whether you are new to online learning or looking to strengthen your skills, this course is designed to help you become a confident and successful online student. Throughout the semester, you will learn strategies for navigating online courses, managing your time effectively, communicating in virtual environments, and utilizing educational technology tools.

My goal is to create an engaging and supportive learning environment where you can build practical skills that will help you succeed in future online and hybrid courses.

Course Description

NC 105 provides students with an introduction to the skills and strategies necessary for success in online learning environments. Topics include:

  • Navigating Canvas and online learning platforms
  • Effective online communication
  • Time management and organization
  • Digital literacy skills
  • Academic integrity in online courses
  • Student support services and resources
  • Study skills for online learners
  • Utilizing technology tools for learning

The course includes a variety of interactive activities, discussions, videos, and assignments that allow students to apply what they learn in real-world situations.

What to Expect in this Course

What to Expect in This Course

Students should expect to spend approximately 3–5 hours per week engaging with course materials and completing assignments.

To be successful in this course, students should:

  • Log into Canvas at least 2–3 times per week
  • Read weekly announcements
  • Complete assigned modules and activities
  • Participate in online discussions
  • Submit assignments by the stated deadlines

First Week Requirements

During the first week of class, students must:

  1. Log into Canvas.
  2. Review the syllabus and orientation materials.
  3. Complete the introductory discussion.
  4. Submit the first required assignment.

Students who do not complete these activities may be dropped from the course in accordance with college attendance policies.

Types of Assessments

Assessments and Assignments

Students can expect to complete a variety of assignments designed to build and strengthen online learning skills. Assessments may include online quizzes, discussion board participation, reflection journals, written assignments, technology-based activities, self-assessments, and a final project or portfolio. Students will regularly engage with course content through Canvas and demonstrate their understanding through weekly assignments and active participation in online learning activities.

Note: This course does not require proctored exams. All assessments are completed online through Canvas.

Textbook Information

No textbook purchase is required for this course. NC 105 is a Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) course. All required readings, videos, handouts, and learning resources will be provided free of charge through Canvas.

Students will access course materials directly within the weekly modules. Additional student support resources and online learning tools may also be provided throughout the course to support student success.

Students should have regular access to a computer or laptop, a reliable internet connection, and Canvas to fully participate in course activities.

Adding the Course

Students wishing to add the course after the semester begins should:

  1. Attend and participate in the course immediately through Canvas.

The Counseling Department offers appointments online. You can schedule an appointment by visiting the Online Counseling website. Counselors can help you map out a plan to reach your educational goals as well as advise you on course selection and registration.

Management of Stress and Mental Health

Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. You can learn more about the broad range of confidential student services, including counseling and mental health services available on campus by visiting the Student Health & Wellness Center in the Student Services Building (across from the bookstore). The phone number is 661-362-3259 that you can call 24/7. You can also e mail for an appointment at StudentHealthCenter@canyons.edu. At the Canyon Country Campus the Health Center will be in the new Student Services Building.

Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.

You can also now use the Crisis Text Line: Just text "Courage" to 741741. Someone will get back to you immediately. Its free, 24/7, and confidential.

Veterans Resource Center

The College of the Canyons Veterans Resource Center is a department within the Student Services Division at the college, created to help veterans and veteran dependents with applying to College of the Canyons, enrolling in classes, and requesting VA Education or Vocational Benefits.
