Introduction

Welcome to Criminal Behavior and Empirical Profiling! My name is Professor Marta Negron, and I am excited to be your instructor this semester. I have over 14 years of law enforcement experience with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, and I enjoy connecting real-world investigations with the concepts you will learn in this course. My goal is to create an engaging and supportive learning environment where you will develop critical thinking and analytical skills while exploring criminal behavior and offender profiling. I look forward to working with you and wish you a successful semester. 

Course Description

Criminal Behavior and Empirical profiling is a five-week course course. It examines issues relating to the development and evaluation of offender profiling as an applied method for use in police investigations. It outlines the main psychological principles of offender profiling including classification of criminal behavior and behavioral change and consistency. An emphasis will be placed on classifying crime scene behaviors, linking behavioral types to offender characteristics, and linking serial offenses.

What to Expect in this Course

This is fully online, five-week course. Students should expect to spend approximately 8-10 hours per week completing readings, lectures, discussions, quizzes, and assignments. A reliable computer and internet connection are required, along with access to Canvas and Microsoft Word or compatible word processor. 

Types of Assessments

Students will be required to complete weekly quizzes, discussion boards, written assignments, case study analyses, and online exams. Assignments are designed to reinforce course concepts and encourage critical thinking and the practical application of offender profiling principles.

Textbook Information

No textbook is required for this course. All required readings, lecture materials, and course resources will be provided through Canvas at no additional cost.

Management of Stress and Mental Health

Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. You can learn more about the broad range of confidential student services, including counseling and mental health services available on campus by visiting the Student Health & Wellness Center in the Student Services Building (across from the bookstore). Veterans Resource Center
