SOCI 106 - Sociology of Race and Etnicity - Briauna Johnson

Introduction

Hello everyone!! My name is Prof. Johnson, and I am very excited to teach SOCI 106! In this class, we will explore how societies define race and ethnicity over time (hint: it is not the biological conclusion that you think!). We will also explore disparities in housing, education, the criminal justice system, and employment. We will analyze how race overlaps with class, gender, and sexuality. And lastly, we will focus on anti-racist practices and the impact of social movements and public policy on civil rights.

Course Description

The Sociology of Race and Ethnicity course examines how race and ethnicity are socially constructed concepts that deeply shape human experiences and structural hierarchies. We will discuss a variety of topics as well as a variety of different racial and ethnic experiences. Students will learn about race and ethnicity both from a historical perspective as well as from a contemporary perspective.

What to Expect in this Course

Access to internet and a computer is very important for success in this course. Weekly, you will have either a short video or a short article to read about the topic labeled in the Module. You will also have periodic small quizzes and discussion board posts. Students will have one social advocacy project that takes place in four installments throughout the semester.

There is no textbook for this course. Any reading material you need will be made available to you via Canvas.

Management of Stress and Mental Health

Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. Veterans Resource Center
