Introduction

Welcome to 100% online project-based STAT-C1000 Introductory Statistics. My name is Siranush Grigoryan. STAT C1000 is a basic introduction to the principles and theory behind statistics and analyzing data. Understanding how decisions are made with data is an important skill in the modern world. There are many jobs available in this field, including data analyst, database manager, data scientist, and statistician.

Course Description

STAT-C1000 with Teachout is a 100% online project-based statistics course that examines statistical methods including collecting data, bias, experimental design, categorical and quantitative data analysis, regression, probability, sampling and theoretical distributions, population estimations, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, categorical and quantitative association tests. The course also shows you how to use computer-based statistical software (Excel and StatKey).

What to Expect in this Course

Important Class Information

  • No Zoom Class Meetings: There will not be any required Zoom meetings. Online classes are asynchronous. This means you watch lecture videos provided in Canvas and work at your own pace. You can meet with your instructor if you need tutoring.

  • Tutoring: The COC Tutoring Center (TLC) offers free tutoring for all COC students. Visit canyons.edu/TLC. You will need your student ID. If you go to TLC, let them know that you need Math 140 Statistics tutoring.

  • Textbook: We will be using the textbook Intro Stats with Support (1st edition, ISBN 9798385182404) by Matt Teachout. The textbook may be purchased at the COC bookstore or on the higher education page at he.kendallhunt.com. After purchasing the code, follow the VitalSource directions to open the textbook. The directions are located at the top left of the “Statistics” page at www.matt-teachout.org. If you have trouble, visit www.vitalsource.com, scroll to the bottom of the page, and click “VitalSource Support.” They have FAQs, troubleshooting guides, and a “Contact Us” button. There is also an instructional video at he.kendallhunt.com/vs_instructions.

  • Class Materials: Recommended materials include a small four-function calculator, 3×5 cards for vocabulary, paper for assignments, a pencil or blue/black pen for initial answers, a red pen for marking incorrect answers, and a green pen for marking correct answers.

  • StatKey: We will primarily use the free statistics analysis program StatKey. StatKey can be accessed at lock5stat.com. StatKey does not need to be downloaded and works well on both Mac and PC computers. You will be taught how to use StatKey during the semester.

  • Excel: Using Excel is an important skill to master. Data sets for the class are saved in Excel files. You will be taught how to use Excel during the semester. It is advisable to have Excel on the computer you plan to use for class. Free versions of Excel are available through your MyCanyons student account.

  • Typical Week: Each week, you will watch lecture videos, read the textbook, and take notes whenever your schedule permits. You can rewatch the lecture videos as many times as you want. You will then try a few problems from the textbook, correct your answers using the provided answer key, and submit your answers and corrections to Canvas. Occasionally, you will also have a class discussion with your classmates in Canvas.

  • Time Commitment: Most people do fine in Stat-C1000 classes as long as they set aside enough time to watch the videos and work on the problems and projects. Remember that a 16-week statistics class was originally designed to meet for five hours per week, not including homework time. An 8-week class meets for about 10 hours per week, not including homework time. A 5-week class usually meets for about 15 hours per week, not including homework time. Everyone works at their own pace, and some students may require more time than others. If you do not have enough time set aside each week to work on the material, it is best not to take the class.

  • Exams: There are a few online Canvas exams. I do not require a proctoring program, but I still expect students not to cheat.

  • Projects: All classes have at least one small class project.

  • Assignments: Assignments are usually discussions with classmates, lecture video or textbook notes, or problems from the textbook. Assignments should be submitted through the “Assignments” menu in Canvas before or on the due date. I do allow you to turn in assignments and projects late without penalty; however, late submissions are accepted only until the “Available until” date listed for each assignment in Canvas. Each assignment has a due date and an “Available until” date. If you do not turn in the textbook problems or discussion by the due date, a zero will be recorded in the gradebook. If you submit the work before the “Available until” date, the grade will be updated to full credit. Assignments cannot be submitted after the “Available until” date, so it is important to keep up with the schedule and not fall behind.

  • Computer Needs: You will need a reliable computer with consistent Internet access. You will also need an up-to-date Internet browser. Chrome or Firefox are preferred for Canvas. You will need a word-processing program, such as Microsoft Word, and a spreadsheet program, such as Microsoft Excel. Both are freely available through your MyCanyons account.

  • Email Needs: You will need a valid MyCanyons email account that you check regularly.

  • Canvas: You will need a basic knowledge of Canvas. You should know how to submit assignments and navigate the menus to access class materials, assignments, and discussion posts.

  • Prerequisite Computer Skills Needed: You should know how to type data into Excel spreadsheets and copy and paste from one Excel or Word document to another. You should know how to save documents, convert them to PDF files, take pictures of your homework, and attach PDFs and pictures to Canvas assignments and email messages.

Types of Assessments

Exams: There are a few online Canvas exams. I do not require a proctoring program, but I still expect students not to cheat.

Projects: All classes have at least one small class project.

Assignments: Assignments are usually either a discussion with your classmates, lecture video or textbook notes, or problems from the textbook. Assignments should be submitted in the “Assignments” menu in Canvas at any time before or on the due date. I do accept late work, but it is important not to fall too far behind.
