Introduction
As both a lawyer and a college professor, I bring a unique blend of practical legal experience and academic insight to the classroom. The first thing I’d like prospective students to know about my course is that it’s designed to not only teach you the fundamentals of legal theory but also to prepare you for real-world application. My goal is to equip you with the skills, critical thinking, and ethical considerations necessary to succeed in both your academic journey and your future legal career.
Course Description
In this course, we will explore the essential principles of contract law, with a focus on how they apply to the work of paralegals. We’ll begin by understanding the fundamentals of contract formation, including offer, acceptance, consideration, and the elements required to create a legally binding agreement. From there, we will dive into more complex topics such as the enforcement of contracts, remedies for breach, third-party rights, and the impact of the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) on contracts involving the sale of goods.
Throughout the course, you’ll gain practical skills in drafting, analyzing, and interpreting contracts, as well as a deep understanding of the ethical considerations involved in contract law. By the end of the course, you will be well-prepared to assist attorneys in contract-related matters, from initial drafting through to resolution of disputes.
What to Expect in this Course
Students can expect a consistent weekly workload that includes reading assignments from the textbook, reviewing supplemental materials, participating in online discussions, and completing practical exercises such as contract drafting or case analysis. On average, you should plan to dedicate several hours each week to these tasks, including time for review and preparation.
Technology-wise, you will need reliable access to the internet, a computer with a webcam and microphone for virtual discussions, and the ability to use a web browser compatible with Canvas, where all course materials, assignments, and announcements will be posted. We will use Canvas for submitting assignments, taking quizzes, and participating in discussions.
As for assessments, you can expect a mix of quizzes, written assignments, and a final exam. Projects will include drafting various types of contracts, analyzing real-world case studies, and possibly a group project where you will collaborate with classmates to solve a legal problem. The goal is to ensure you not only understand the theory but also develop the practical skills needed for a successful career as a paralegal.
