Introduction

Most of the course will be done on Canvas. All lectures and labs will be provided in Modules of Canvas. For each chapter, there will be prerecorded lecture videos along. There will be also information available on what videos to watch, what activities can be performed at home, and/or what lab simulations needed to be downloaded to perform the lab.

Homework and Quizzes will be done on MasteringPhysics.

The scheduled class times will be used for reviewing the required material, problem solving, part of the group work, office hours and exams. The live meetings will be done using Zoom. Attending this scheduled meeting is mandatory. You can ask questions about something you didn't understand in the lecture video, or if you need help with homework or lab assignments. 

 

Course Description

Calculus-based introduction to classical electricity and magnetism, including such topics as, electric charge and electric fields, Gauss's law, electric potential, capacitance, current, resistance, and circuits, magnetic fields, and fields due to currents, induction, and inductance, the magnetism of matter, Maxwell's equations, and electromagnetic oscillations.

What to Expect in this Course

Students need Mastering Physics account.

Students are expected to work in groups to discuss the Worksheet and the Lab activity.

Students are expected to watch a weekly videos and take notes.

Textbook Information

Physics for Scientists and Engineers with MasteringPhysics 4th ed. The loose-leaf packaged option is the cheapest. An ebook of the text can also be purchased through MasteringPhysics, as an alternative format. Required: Purchase of MasteringPhysics

Canvas

This course can be accessed on the first day of class via Canvas at https://coc.instructure.com. Log into Canvas using your CanyonsID single sign-on:

  • CanyonsID Username is your COC student email address (Ex: username@my.canyons.edu)
  • CanyonsID Password is your COC student email password

Management of Stress and Mental Health

Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. You can learn more about the broad range of confidential student services, including counseling and mental health services available on campus by visiting the Student Health & Wellness Center in the Student Services Building (across from the bookstore). At the Canyon Country Campus the Health Center will be in the new Student Services Building.

Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.

You can also now use the Crisis Text Line: Just text "Courage" to 741741. Someone will get back to you immediately. Its free, 24/7, and confidential.

Veterans Resource Center
