Introduction

Hello and Welcome! I am excited that you have decided to register for SIGN 112. I am looking forward to getting to know each of you better once the semester begins. Here’s a little bit about me. I have been using American Sign Language for most of my life. I started teaching the language in 1994. I started teaching interpreting/transliterating at the college level in 2005. I was a workshop leader for nearly a decade prior to my teaching experience. I have extensive experience with interpreting. Over the past 35 years, I have worked as a staff interpreter and an interpreter coordinator at the post-secondary level, obtained RID certification, created an interpreter training program, and taught at both the college and university levels. I’ve been a full-time professor at College of the Canyons since 2005. I enjoy teaching and assisting my students as they develop a better understanding of the interpreting profession.

Course Description

Introduces students to the sign language interpreting profession including the history of interpreting, models of interpretation, professional standards, code of ethics, cultural and linguistic backgrounds of consumers and colleagues, interpreter assessments, credentialing, roles and responsibilities.
