I am excited that you have decided to register for SIGN 206. Most of you know me, but if you do not, here’s a little bit about me. I have been using American Sign Language for most of my life. I started teaching the language in 1994. I started teaching interpreting/transliterating at the college level in 2005. I was a workshop leader for nearly a decade prior to my teaching experience. I have extensive experience with interpreting. Over the past 35 years, I have worked as a staff interpreter and an interpreter coordinator at the post-secondary level, obtained RID certification, created an interpreter training program, and taught at both the college and university levels. I’ve been a full-time professor at College of the Canyons since 2005. I enjoy teaching and assisting my students as they acquire interpreting skills and strategies. I truly want to my students to succeed. My office hours are always inviting. By the end of the semester, you will acquire the knowledge and skills required for simultaneous Sign to English interpretation/transliteration.
SIGN 206 focuses on the skills required for accurate simultaneous Sign to English interpretation/transliteration. The course takes a theoretical and practical approach to analyzing the process and discussing common techniques and challenges. The course is highly interactive. Students will be active learners in the course.
What to Expect in this Course
You will need to attend the course at the times we are meeting. This is a synchronous OnlineLIVE class. You will need to access it via Zoom. You need a webcam for the course. The camera must be on during each class meeting. You must also have a working microphone. The course will utilize Zoom (ConferZoom), Canvas, and GoReact. There will be video assessments, homework assignments, and in class activity.
Types of Assessments
Assessments: Video assessments on GoReact. These will measure your Sign to English interpreting skills.
Quizzes: Varied on Canvas.
Homework will be submitted on Canvas.

This class will feature both OnlineLIVE and In-Person instruction. The OnlineLIVE LECTURE will be conducted via Canvas/Zoom during scheduled times. In-person meetings on 3/2, 3/16, 4/20 and 5/11 in UCEN-206.
