Introduction
Welcome to SOC233: Sociological Issues of Life and Longevity!
Please read this letter for some information about the course before we begin. The Syllabus and welcome announcements will contain more information, but this should get you ready.
Course Description
About This Course
This semester we will examine the aging process through a sociological lens.
This course in entirely online in Canvas. We will not meet in person or in real time (office hours are the exception – read below for more info on that!) This course is also asynchronous, which means you can more or less work at your own pace, although there are due dates you should stay aware of.
You are not required to purchase any materials for this course. All required readings and videos* have been made available to you in Canvas.
What to Expect in this Course
Getting Started
Once you’ve entered the class, please complete the following:
- Read the course Syllabus! This contains important information about policies, due dates, and instructions regarding major assignments. Use this document throughout the course to remind you about how this course will be conducted, how to contact me, and due dates.
- Complete the course check-in activity by the due date. This is used to check your “first day” attendance. Students who do not complete this activity on time will be dropped to allow for space for waitlisted students.
- Complete the Introduction/Getting Started Module by the first Sunday after the course begins. Not completing this module may also lead to getting dropped from the course for non-attendance.
Types of Assessments
Students are assessed using quizzes, discussions, writing assignments, and presentations.

Accessing This Course
Log in to Canvas from the Canyons.edu homepage using your CanyonsID. If you are enrolled, you should see this course on your Canvas Dashboard once it becomes available to students. (I usually open courses a day or two before the semester officially begins, but don’t panic if you don’t see it until the start of the semester.)
If your course does not appear in Canvas please check the following things before contacting

- Did you pay for the course?
- Do you have any holds on your account that would deny you access?
- Has it been more than 24 hours since you have added the class to your My Canyons account?

Online Counseling
The Counseling Department offers appointments online. You can schedule an appointment by visiting the Online Counseling website. Counselors can help you map out a plan to reach your educational goals as well as advise you on course selection and registration.
Management of Stress and Mental Health
Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. You can learn more about the broad range of confidential student services, including counseling and mental health services available on campus by visiting the Student Health & Wellness Center in the Student Services Building (across from the bookstore). The phone number is 661-362-3259 that you can call 24/7. You can also e mail for an appointment at StudentHealthCenter@canyons.edu. At the Canyon Country Campus the Health Center will be in the new Student Services Building.
Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.
You can also now use the Crisis Text Line: Just text "Courage" to 741741. Someone will get back to you immediately. Its free, 24/7, and confidential.
Veterans Resource Center
The College of the Canyons Veterans Resource Center is a department within the Student Services Division at the college, created to help veterans and veteran dependents with applying to College of the Canyons, enrolling in classes, and requesting VA Education or Vocational Benefits.
