Span-101 - Elementary Spanish I - FIORELLA CHAUCA

Introduction

¡Hola! Welcome to the Elementary Spanish 101 class. If you don't have any knowledge of the language, you are in the right class. My name is Fiorella Chauca and I am excited to facilitate your learning experience this term! I trust that you will find Spanish language and culture fascinating and highly enriching. Most students do well in my courses because they are focused and determined to complete the accelerated course. I want students to succeed, so I dedicate my time to promptly answering emails addressing questions and concerns. I enjoy posting feedback comments to help students build upon and evolve in their learning.

Course Description

This course studies Spanish as a foreign language within its rich and relevant cultural contexts. It presents vocabulary, structures, and grammatical patterns necessary for comprehension and production of spoken and written Spanish at the college level while developing all four skills and culture. Taught in Spanish. CSU/UC 5 credit units. Not appropriate for heritage speakers. Structures include present tense, progressive form, and preterit tense. Context relates to the student’s personal world (school, work, family, social life, travel).

At the end of this class, students will be able to (1) demonstrate competence by communicating through reading, writing, speaking, and listening in Spanish at the novice mid-level. (2) Analyze the relationship between perspectives, practices, and products of the Spanish culture at the novice mid-level.

What to Expect in this Course

Students will receive a welcome email on the week prior to the first day of class. Please log into Canvas on the first scheduled day of class and complete the Day 1 module, to avoid being reported as No Show (automatic drop). The content is delivered in Canvas following a weekly modular configuration.  All course communication is through the student's canyons email. Start with your weekly assignments from the first day of the week, set aside valuable time to review and practice the material learned every week, use the resources available for your course (tutoring, optional live sessions, study groups, etc.), and finally maintain good communication with your instructor. 

Types of Assessments

Weekly vocabulary, grammar and culture quizzes and exams are conducted asynchronously in Canvas and the Ebook. There are two required oral exams (midterm and final) conducted in real time. All online classes required two 15-minute oral assessments via Zoom. 

Textbook Information

Conectados Ebook & MindTap access (do not purchase prior to class, wait to receive instructions).  Students will have direct access to the eBook from Canvas on day 1. 

Other Relevant Course Information

Students will need a computer with Internet access, a working microphone, and video camera. Voice and video recording activities are vital in a language course. Tablets, apps, and other mobile devices can be used to view or read content, but assignments and evaluations can only be performed on a computer.

The Counseling Department offers appointments online. You can schedule an appointment by visiting the Online Counseling website. Counselors can help you map out a plan to reach your educational goals as well as advise you on course selection and registration.

Management of Stress and Mental Health

Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. You can learn more about the broad range of confidential student services, including counseling and mental health services available on campus by visiting the Student Health & Wellness Center in the Student Services Building (across from the bookstore). The phone number is 661-362-3259 that you can call 24/7. You can also e mail for an appointment at StudentHealthCenter@canyons.edu. At the Canyon Country Campus the Health Center will be in the new Student Services Building.

Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.

You can also now use the Crisis Text Line: Just text "Courage" to 741741. Someone will get back to you immediately. Its free, 24/7, and confidential.

Veterans Resource Center

The College of the Canyons Veterans Resource Center is a department within the Student Services Division at the college, created to help veterans and veteran dependents with applying to College of the Canyons, enrolling in classes, and requesting VA Education or Vocational Benefits.
